NASA head comments on finding alien life

UM-Bot

Charles Bolden has commented on what would happen if NASA encountered an extraterrestrial life form.

The discovery that we are not alone in the universe is likely to be one of the most important events in human history - but what procedures do we have in place to deal with such an eventuality ?

"In fact, we have guidelines that prevent us from, for example, on Mars getting too close to a place that may be a source of living organisms, because we don’t want to contaminate that area."

So that's why we haven't been back to the moon

NASA does not need to worry about protecting fragile xeno-ecosystems.

They need to be making recipes for this new and potentially delicious life.

I hope any alien microbial life is examined in a compartmentalized wing of the International Space Station. I'm less worried about "us" contaminating "them" then the reverse, I've see too many plagues when a mere earth organism is transported accidentally from one continent to another. Given time, I could name dozens of mistakes we have made in releasing something into a new home with no natural controls or predators, and it isn't pretty. You never know, an alien species might just REALLY like it here.

It didn't happen with the moon landing and those fears have been largely proven false.

Why the alarm bells now?

Because, even in the 1960s it was known that life on the Moon was extraordinarily unlikely.

In 2015 it is known that Mars may be suitable for microbial life.

Comparing the Moon to Mars is an invalid comparison.

The moon people eat the moon snails.

Read it years ago in the papers.

I think we have had so many films/tv shows, so many documentaries and so many talk shows/forums about it that if we ever did find alien life it wouldn't be that big a deal.

Maybe a decade or more ago but now i think most people would just think, yeh ok cool.

I don't know how we could put in place a policy for dealing with intelligent life, we can't plan anything we know nothing about...

"The space agency has no policies in place at all for handling such a situation" That's a little strange. I'm not a big believer in UFO's zipping around our solor system, but even I would have SOMETHING in place for that "situation". Amazing

So it seems...and what type of situation would you mean ? - an attack from a malevolent species maybe ?

Sure thing - hey! - here's an idea -

That statement rings untrue to me. In the times of project blue book they had a protective protecal for intelligent unknowns and microbial since we started exploring space. I just can't see not not having anything now when we need it most for non earth microbes with Mars having such potential for organic activity. I would guess there are still things in place in a procedures manual somewhere, might not be NASA though. At least I hope there is!

"A civilization reading one of our messages could be billions of years ahead of us. If so, they will be vastly more powerful, and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria."

I think nasa will definitely investigate/explore even if they found a planet of non-inteligent animals!

Right. Blue Book was Air Force. The services have contingencies for a ridiculously wide variety of situations.

Just last year or two there was some big "expose" about contingency plans for attacking an ally, or something like that. Can't remember.

It is irresponsible not to have some sort of plan in place for any contingency you can imagine. So, the military branches have these procedures.

if they aliens are inferior to us surely we will put them in cages at Zoo, will hunt them, kill them for fun sports or eat them cooked with rice.

Can someone prove me wrong ?

Since we don't know if such aliens exist of course no one can prove you wrong. More importantly you can't prove you are right.

I would certainly eat a non-sentient alien animal. Particularly with rice.

There's a whole universe of flavors out there just waiting to be tasted!

I can.

Rice spikes my blood glucose. I'd eat them in a nice stew, with some taters and carrots, maybe an onion.

How would we meet them if they were "inferior" to us? (whatever "interior" means)

Unfortunately :D you are right my friend.

The world ( and not so long ago ) had 'Emu war'. Knowing that, there is no need to mention any of extinct species, that is just icing on the cake. Surely the most cruel individuals are part of humans - animals kill to eat, people kill for fun and they even kill other people. Can we ride Mars bacteria? Go for it! Selfie with Mars microbes? Go for it.

Gone viral... Brains gone... Gorilla smart.

If they were "interior," we would already have eaten them. This (obviously) presupposes introductions.

One does wonder what the reaction will be if alien life is discovered. A week ago the international media were in raptures over the detection of gravitational waves - the most important discovery of the century, and so on. A week later, it's forgotten and the media has moved on to other subjects. Perhaps the same situation will occur when (if) alien life is discovered - the most important discovery of all time, and so on. No doubt the media interest will last substantially longer than a week, but even such a momentous event will become yesterday's news.

I have a nut intolerance. As long as there's no walnuts, cashews, etc. As much as I love those ingredients in a meal they give me horrible digestive symptoms.

So someone please concoct an alien meal without nuts and I'll gladly partake in a nice alien stew.

I'll take along some really nice pale ales to wash it down with.

Theres a lot of missing people and a lot of people eager to eat some alien... You dont suppose that there are aliens eager to eat us after a long trip through void space do you?
