'Bin Laden' Tape Surfaces on Web

An audio tape said to have been recorded by al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has praised a recent attack on a US consulate in Saudi Arabia.

The recording, posted on an Islamic website, has not been verified.

In the tape a speaker identified as Bin Laden is said to bless a group of Saudi militants who stormed the building in Jeddah on 6 December.

The voice also blamed Saudi leaders for unrest in the kingdom, accusing them of "violating God's rules".

Earlier this month Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said recent intelligence proved that the al-Qaeda leader was alive - but he said the trail was "completely cold".

'Mercy for mujahideen'

Saudi Arabia has been battling a wave of attacks in the past 18 months, which it blames on the al-Qaeda network.

Nine people, including four militants, were killed in the consulate attack, which was claimed by the group. A fifth militant was arrested at the scene.

"We ask God to be merciful with the mujahideen who stormed the US consulate in Jeddah," the speaker said in the recording, in excerpts quoted by Reuters news agency.

Saudi-born Bin Laden has repeatedly called for the toppling of the kingdom's ruling family.

"The responsibility for the current situation in Saudi Arabia rests with the regime," the recording said, according to AFP news agency.

"In Saudi Arabia, it is the king and not Allah who commands sovereignty and complete obedience."

The speaker said he had advised the government two decades ago to "remedy the situation", adding: "it has not changed at all".

Analysts say the voice and style of the speaker are similar to Bin Laden's.

The last appearance of the militant leader was just before the US election on 2 November, in a video tape in which he threatened fresh attacks on the US, whoever was elected.

He appeared in good health in the tape, but it was not clear when it was recorded.

Bin Laden is widely believed to have been hiding in the mountains along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border since US-backed forces toppled Afghanistan's Taleban regime in late 2001.

His crappy little 1984 version video camera must have broken.

I would put money on the fact that the technology he uses to broadcast his insane rantings is produced by US companies.

If we're interested to analyze why it was an audio tape this time and not a video, there's an interesting conclusion to be made.

1) Either it wasn't Osama Bin Laden's voice (and thus we may even start to wonder whether he's still alive or not)

2) His health has deteriorated to a degree that a "public appearance" is no longer beneficiary for him and his group (for obvious reasons)

Tell the telephone company he owes them money. They'll find him...

How about turning him into a collection agent for his unpais hospital bills. Those folks can find anyone.

Is it so hard for the CIA to create a virus that spreads to every computer with access to the internet, which will, when the computer is uploading a video, add a footnote to the binary code displaying the IP of the person who uploaded it or something?

Heh. Never seen CIA and computers in the same sentence tongue.gif

Regardless, they could "aquire" some "outside assistance" to do the tracking for them.

It's really not that hard for them to find out where the clips originate.
