8 Family Members Killed In Ohio

This article is long with a lot of pictures but it's a good synopsis of the trial. It only took the jury 8 hours to convict. It doesn't say when the sentencing trial is. I'll keep looking. The death penalty is off the table.

This is from a Cincinnati TV station. It says the death penalty was removed the 22nd November when it was determined that Jake and Angela had fulfilled their part of the plea bargain and testified truthfully. I thought they were saying in what I did see that it was still on the table.

I did find this. So I'm guessing sentencing will be right after Christmas or New Years. Dad's trial is in 2023.

I got so involved in other cases I didn't follow up on this one. George Wagner IV was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the Rhoden family murders. He was actually sentenced in December.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/george-wagner-iv-sentenced-life-prison-murders-rhoden-family-ohio/

Prosecutors said George Wagner shows no remorse and should be imprisoned with no chance of parole. They said what he really deserved was a death sentence and that he was spared only because of his brother's actions, not his own.

The prosecution alleged Wagner was with his brother and father when they went to the homes, that he went inside, and that he helped his brother move two bodies.

Wagner's attorneys emphasized that he didn't kill anyone and argued that denying him "a meaningful chance of parole" would be unconstitutional cruel and unusual punishment.

They also requested a new trial. Judge Randy Deering denied that motion Monday.

Billy Wagner (dad) has had his trial delayed while the court looks to appoint a new judge. This is from January 19.

George “Billy” Wagner III, accused of murdering eight members of the Rhoden family in 2016 alongside the rest of his immediate family, appeared in a Pike County courtroom for a pretrial hearing Wednesday afternoon — and for the first time since his son George Wagner IV’s trial and sentencing.

The hearing, which lasted five minutes, centered on the outgoing judge. Deering is retiring, and his term ends on Feb. 8. Current Pike County Prosecutor Rob Junk is set to take his place at the bench, but Junk’s prosecution of other Wagner family members produces a conflict of interest.

The Ohio Supreme Court is now tasked with appointing a new judge to Billy’s case, and then trial dates will likely be set in February, Deering said.

Billy faces 22 charges related to the killings, including eight counts of aggravated murder. After a weekslong trial, George was found guilty in November 2022 by a jury on the same slate of charges, and in December 2022 sentenced to life in prison without parole eligibility

Maybe he didn't kill anyone but he didn't try to stop the others from murdering! Plus, he chose to go along with them, he could have said 'no' . . . heck! he could have turned them in!

He helped move bodies. He had every opportunity to leave or refuse and didn't. You're right. He could have reported this to police but he knew he was too involved himself. But I'm sure LE would have rather offered him a plea deal than Jake. Or he could have said something before any of this even happened. He knew the plan.

I miswrote here. Billy Wagner, the father, will go on trial now in January/ February 2024.
