Still Waters Posted April 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 23, 2016 Two sophomores at the University of Washington have been recognized for an invention that could break down communication barriers for the deaf. Their invention, the SignAloud, is a pair of sensor-filled gloves that interpret the hand movements American Sign Language users use to communicate, and converts them into speech or text that the rest of us can understand. http://blogs.discove...anguage-gloves/

DeeSember Posted April 24, 2016 #6 Share Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) Stephen Hawking cant sign.... but his synth can talk.... why need gloves? Maybe the gloves are protection in case they are talking dirty with someone? Edited April 24, 2016 by DeeSember

Auntyseptic Posted April 24, 2016 #8 Share Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) But isn't the whole point of sign language to communicate without talking? People should be encouraged to learn it themselves so they can sign back at the person, These gloves may help someone who doesn't use sign language but it doesn't help them communicate back. Biggz Posted April 25, 2016 #9 Share Posted April 25, 2016 The point is to help them ease communication in their everyday life. Not everyone knows sign language, so imaging if you were mute and wanted to ask for directions or w/e else you might need and that person doesn't understand sign language...Well these gloves are perfect for situations like these. I didn't dig into this but it would be cool if they had many different languages, which i'm sure they probably do.
