St Georges day cancelled due to immigrants

Multiculturalism is where people of different heritages come together and learn the adaptive host culture and in cases and in time, merge new traditions (as opposed to replace) with appropriate elements of older cultures all while keeping the flavor of the host culture. Kowtowing to complaints by one culture is not multiculturalism. I.e. if you want to immigrate to France from Syria, then your one goal in life is to become French, not go on a Hijrah.

You couldn't be more wrong. You think that multiculturalism is a melting pot dominated by the predominate culture.

Multiculturalism is a mosaic of people who come together to make a beautiful picture.

Out of 300 people? About 3 Filipinos, maybe 15 Cambodians, 15 or more Chinese and maybe 15 or 20 others (largely Native, Slavic). The rest of us are white as rice and appreciate their input.

Does your community of 300 appreciate the input of the muslim minority in your community as well?........ wait a second..... there are none! Forgive me while you lecture others about the greatness of multiculturalism in their countries.... lol

A couple of things:

It seems to me that no events were cancelled because none were organised in the first place.

Which leads me to my second point. I lived in the UK for 35 years and I can't recall there ever being much fuss about St George's day.

I'm sure some people dress up and destroy a few papier-mâché dragons, but it was always a very long way from being a national day of celebration.

So some people are upset because no one wants to celebrate what no one was interested in celebrating in the first place.

Oh jeez, I forgot that my community stopped across the bridge. I honestly thought that my community was extended. Thanks acidhead for reminding me that I should be xenophobic and exclusionary beyond my remote borders.

Not a homogeneous melting pot, but a merging of cultures. But these cultures must submit to the predominate culture. If not then what is the purpose of having a place called Canada? Without this framework, how can you make a beautiful picture?

No. It's not a merging of cultures even, and there is no "submission" to a predominate culture unless that "predominate culture" is multiculturalism. Last weekend in Surrey, B.C. 350,000 people came out for the Vaishaki celebration, and at least a third weren't East Indian. It was a cultural celebration, the same as we celebrate Chinese New Year (Gung Hai Fat Choy) or the friigin' Highland Games.

You're welcome. I think it's very ignorant to compare Canada's asian multiculturalism to the muslim multiculturalism europeans are experiencing. They're not even close to the same.

Because everyone knows there's no such thing as an Asian Muslim?

Hey, maybe you were being ignorant for asking me about my specific community in the first place then? ;)

This isn't multiculturalism though, that's all cultures together - that's Vietnamese people cooking Mexican food, selling it to Welshmen on their way to a Greek Paniereri festival in a Japanese car in Australia - this is cultural cowardice, people being afraid of being called racist because they're proud of their culture and wanting to share it with others.

If the silly buggers sold it better they could have squeezed a public holiday in - everyone wins!!!

Hope all is good at home mate, your brother is in my thoughts.

That is how I understand it is supposed to work.

I'll have to regroup and take your position into reconsideration. I leave the field to you.

No such problems in Nottingham UK and we have our share of foreign cultures...there was a massive parade through the city.Mind you the council didn't cough up a penny towards it.

No. It's because there is a difference between the asian muslim in Canada and the arab or african muslim. I personally know some philipino and indonesian muslims here in Victoria. You wouldn't even know they are muslim because they sure as hell don't act religious in the slightest... men and women. My wife is christian indonesian and have been in conversations with her friends who are muslim who will even say these arab and african muslims need to be screened thoroughly before they should be allowed into Canada.

Cheers Psyche.

Someone once worked out if we had a public holiday for all the major religions, than not a for isn't would pass without an extra day off, that's not counting Catholic Feasts of the Saints, because we have one every couple of days in Ordinary a Time.

Ive lived here all my 50 years of life....I 'personally' dont celebrate Georges day....much the same as I dont 'celebrate' Easter.....tho I do buy others Easter eggs, and even receive some occasionally too....and thats the same for many of my mates too....but for sure, there ARE celebrations....see some pics

People are upset because councils have banned it as they don't want to offend foreigners. Perhaps you're offended by it too?

Perhaps I'm offended by what?

Very little offends me. Except, maybe, when someone makes an assumption about me based on very little information.

That's a little offensive.

I do not understand your point. Not having a go at you, just genuinely confused. If radical groups are denied entry due to the risk they pose to the community, do you consider that racist? I do not think Multiculturalism means that evil people should be integrated into peaceful communities.

I'm the confused one... I'm trying to figure out why you ask this question based on what you're responding to that I wrote. But to answer your question: No, I don't consider it racist in the slightest.

I guess what I found confusing was your comment to LG on multiculturalism. I took your post to imply it was selective, but then you mentioned a multicultural environment that they themselves see as a threat to peaceful society, do you consider Canada a multicultural success or failure?

Does it matter where this saint comes from? Places like Germany and Georgia celebrate Saint George.
