Are dire wolves real animals ?

Dire Wolves are real animals. But they are no longer around. They were around during the Ice Age but went extinct. The Dire Wolf was roughly the size of the extant Gray Wolf, but with a heavier build.

I saw a dire wolf skeleton at the Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven CT last summer, so for the sake of the museum's credibility I hope it was a real animal.
