UM-Bot Posted May 15, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2016 After years of poaching, the world's population of northern white rhinos has been reduced to three. Few species on Earth share the level of critical endangerment as these animals and now, with a mere three individuals remaining, the fate of the northern white rhino hangs in the balance. +DieChecker Posted May 15, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 15, 2016 They are effectively extinct. Basically curiosities at this point. There isn't enough genetic diversity for them to recover long term even with cloning and surrogates. It is sad, but they were on this track since the were wiped down from about 500 to a couple dozen during the 1970s and 80s. Thankfully the Southern White Rhino is now being ranched in some places and shouldn't have the same problems.

Infernal Gnu Posted May 15, 2016 #8 Share Posted May 15, 2016 Wait a minute, we are all animals too, and since all animal behavior is "natural," so mankind's "brutal" behavior is just another example of an animal's behavior towards another animal...ultimately no metaphysical difference from a lion killing a gazelle. geraldnewfie Posted May 15, 2016 #9 Share Posted May 15, 2016 leave it to humans to ruin everything we touch!! cant wait for the day aliens comes and says we ruined the planet we live on and we ****ed up and leaves us again.
Careful_perspective Posted May 15, 2016 #10 Share Posted May 15, 2016 This makes me so sad More countries need to realize the value in their rare animals. There is a great amount of money that can be made in ecotourism from people who are traveling to these countries with the appeal of seeing these rare animals.

3.0 Posted May 16, 2016 #12 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Now that there are three left, they try to do something? Where was the concern or action when they were dozens?

MJNYC Posted May 16, 2016 #14 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Screw chinese bullcrap medicine. They should be the ones to go extinct. They should go extinct, not only for this but for their disgusting torture of dogs and cats, before they eat them. I don't buy anything made in China if I can avoid it; wish the rest of the world would do the same. I think that each person that does this, might help to wake them up. Barbarians.

Really? Acting like a barbarian is natural? So, we should all act without manners, or morals or kindness? The animal world does not kill for sport or kill to extinction. Sorry, your statement is just dumb.
Dark_Grey Posted May 16, 2016 #16 Share Posted May 16, 2016 Solve poverty and you'll solve a lot of the poaching. Not sure how to educate people on the folly of rhino horn elixirs...

Myles Posted May 16, 2016 #18 Share Posted May 16, 2016 why can't poachers just get another productive job? Apparently there are not jobs available paying as much as poaching does.

Infernal Gnu Posted May 16, 2016 #20 Share Posted May 16, 2016 The difference is that we should know better. We have the ability to do research. We have access to information. It doesn't change the fact that all our behaviors, whether angelic or beastly, are just as totally, absolutely natural as that of any "dumb" animal, we ARE animals after all. We are not special. Other animals have intelligence and an emotional life as well. The poachers are simply animals killing other animals just like cats killing animals they don't eat. THAT should be pretty outrageous animal behavior as well.

I'm not being prescriptive, just descriptive, Acting like a "barbarian" or an "angel" is natural, yes. Cats kill for sport. Your statement is just dumb and illogical. We human ANIMALS are always exhibiting a mix of cruel and kind behavior in our daily lives. Edited May 16, 2016 by Infernal Gnu

If a cat knew it was killing the last few mice, it would let them multiply to sustain itself further. They do not have that capability. Humans do. Humans have the knowledge and resources to make a difference and preserve a species. We should use that skill. Your thought would also apply to someone who decides to kill your parents, right?

Well said, I don't need to answer. Sorry, I truly think comparing us to the "animal" kingdom does us and the animals no good at all. Animals are not inherently evil; we can be if we allow ourselves to be.

They also kill sharks for the hell of it, they know sharks need to swim to breath, and they hold them in place and turn them upside down to essentially suffocate them. Pure sport killing machine.
