According to scientists, Chimborazo in Ecuador is actually quite a bit taller than Mount Everest.

There remain few peaks on Earth that can match the breathtaking spectacle and challenging conditions of Everest - officially the world's tallest mountain.

So now the world has been introduced to mountain envy. I thought I saw something years ago that said there are mountains completely under water that are higher than Everest. I guess there will be a new flurry of expeditions to Chimborazo now for all the testosterone that will have to be able to boast they climbed the highest mountain. (Not to insult any ladies who want to climb as well. I'm sure there will be some.)

The underwater mountain is an island of Hawaii, its base is on the ocean floor so it is the tallest, but Everest has a higher elevation in the sky.

height is relative.

so must always be measured from sea level/ ground level.

not from bottom of sea, middle of earth.

Great, here comes more tv news reports on "heroes" that climb that mountain for some bull**** reason, or like they say they climb it to call out attention to some social issue when in reality they did it for themselves.

Yes it is.

Mountains are measured from sea level and by that method Mount Everest is still the highest mountain on Earth.

Chimborazo is the point on Earth that is furthest from the center, but since that is irrelevant when measuring the hight of a mountain, this is basically a non-story.

It doesn't make sense to me to measure height from the center of the earth. It only makes sense to measure from sea level I think.

Does this mean K2 the second highest mountain on Earth becomes K4 now? Behind the Everest, Chimborazo and Hawaii.

A mountain is only as tall as the desires it provokes to climb it ~
