Bush Named "Person of the Year"

Reported By: The Associated Press

Last Modified: 12/19/2004 12:32:48 PM

NEW YORK (AP) -- After winning re-election and "reshaping the rules of politics to fit his 10-gallon-hat leadership style," President George Bush for the second time was chosen as Time magazine's Person of the Year.

The magazine's editors tapped Bush "for sharpening the debate until the choices bled, for reframing reality to match his design, for gambling his fortunes -- and ours -- on his faith in the power of leadership."

Time's 2004 Person of the Year package, on newsstands Monday, includes an Oval Office interview with Bush, an interview with his father, former President George H. W. Bush, and a profile of Bush's chief political adviser, Karl Rove.

In an interview with the magazine, Bush attributed his victory over Democratic candidate John Kerry to his foreign policy and the wars he began in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"The election was about the use of American influence," Bush said.

After a grueling campaign, Bush remains a polarizing figure in America and around the world, and that's part of the reason he earned the magazine's honor, said Managing Editor Jim Kelly.

"Many, many Americans deeply wish he had not won," Kelly said in a telephone interview. "And yet he did."

In the Time article, Bush said he relishes that some people dislike him.

"I think the natural instinct for most people in the political world is that they want people to like them," Bush said. "On the other hand, I think sometimes I take kind of a delight in who the critics are."

Bush joins six other presidents who have twice won the magazine's top honor: Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower (first as a general), Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and Bill

Clinton. Franklin Roosevelt holds the record with three nods from the editors.

Kelly said Bush has changed dramatically since he was named Person of the Year in 2000 after the Supreme Court awarded him the presidency.

"He is not the same man," Kelly said. "He's a much more resolute man. He is personally as charming as ever but I think the kind of face he's shown to the American public is one of much, much greater determination."

The magazine gives the honor to the person who had the greatest impact, good or bad, over the year.

Kelly said other candidates included Michael Moore and Mel Gibson, "because in different ways their movies tapped in to deep cultural streams," and political strategist Rove, who is widely credited with engineering Bush's win. Kelly said choosing Rove alone would have taken away from the credit he said Bush deserves.

This is the first time an individual has won the award since 2001, when then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was celebrated for his response to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The American soldier earned the honor last year; in 2002, the magazine tapped Coleen Rowley, the FBI agent who wrote a critical memo on FBI intelligence failures, and Cynthia Cooper and Sherron Watkins, who blew the whistle on scandals at Enron and Worldcom.

You know, even if you actually liked Bush (for some ungodly reason), I don't see how you could even pretend to believe he's the person of the year. Many, many people across the world have risked, and in some cases sacrificed, their lives for the betterment of the world, while Bush has been sitting cosy in the Whitehouse getting richer, while people die on his orders.

This 'award' is an absolute joke...

Very true Sera...

How about the Marine in the other thread that threw himself on a grenade to save his buddies. He'd get my vote.

This reminds me of a few years ago when the guy who scored the winning goal for England in the world cup way back when (and they remain convinced they're going to do it every year tongue.gif) was given some award for heroism or some such thing...

The very same night, I watched a program that used to be on about real life rescues, and there was a story about a guy who dived into a lake to haul a drowning girl to safety. Right now, I'm thinking much the same thing I did then...why are real heroes being passed over, for the sake of blind, flag waving, please the masses, patriotic, crap?

I think any one of the people from this list would have made a good choice for person of the year: Faces of the Fallen

Having the man of the year as Bush is just plain silly. He risks nothing, but sends kids to their deaths(and dismemberment). He doesn't deserve man of the year. it is sickening.

It's what Bush stands for. That's why he is man of the year. Sure, those valiant and brave men are heros, but Bush is the symbol of all those brave souls.

And here is the symbol of Bush.

Or at least a symbol very close to his heart...far closer, indeed, than the lives of those he sent to die for the sake of getting that symbol closer to home.

I am sure he issued himself a citation for valiantly defeating the offending pretzel. With a pay raise. He then blamed the pretzel attack on Saddam and sent 10,000 more troops to Iraq...

Hmmm...Pretzel of the Year award goes to?

yes, but it did give it's life in the line of duty. it should get some type of posthumous award. At least for the well-being of the pretzels wife and children so that they know their loved one died a hero.

Yes, well, Bush isnt the one sacrificing himself to protect others, is he?

Babs...that comment was just sick. You can't possibly support the troops and support the war at the same time. The only way to support those valiant souls is to oppose the man who sent them into hell. That is perhaps the stupidest thing that you have ever said.

If there would ever be ''the biggest idiot of the year'''I have no doubt Bush would win,

But this................

Looks like he gave the Time a lot of money to say that.

I think most people dislike Bush (everyone in the Netherlands at least)

Or maybe it could be because we actually care about the troops in Iraq, whereas you're more concerned about the man who sent them there.

Funny how the right-wing maniacs claim to be pro-war and pro-life at the same time, isn't it?
