Funnily enough there was a report yesterday on the Beast of Bodmin (another black cat that roamed the moors), and it is believed in the report that the creature that was sited many times was an escaped Panther that had broke out of captivity in the 90's and managed to survive until around the 2000's when a particularly bad winter hit the country and sightings of it seemed to stop. They believe it had been living on wildlife and avoiding detection apart from the odd sighting until it died of possibly hypothermia in that cold winter.

as a resident of florida i can personally gurantee it wasnt a black panther. could have been a cougar. black panthers are a myth.

My son and his friend when they were around 15 both saw a black panther in the woods on a camping trip.  They were playing on a fallen tree and when it hopped down an embankment and ran by them at close range, it scared his friend so much that he fell off the tree and directly into a huge patch of poison oak underneath.  This made the occasion memorable for them because the boy had to go to the hospital for shots because he got such a horrible rash from the incident.  This was in the Oregon area.

my mistake. their is no such thing as a black florida panther. all the cougars, leopards, and jaguars can be black

some years back they decided the panthers mitochondrial dna was close to that of cougars, leopards, and jaguars. they decided to use the term panther as an umbrella term for 32 different cats. their are approximately 80 real panthers left in the wild in south florida. it is the most endangered mammal on earth
