seeder Posted September 8, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2016 Quote Biblical plague fears: Mystery as Russian arctic river turns BLOOD RED LOCALS are shocked at the eerie transformation of this Arctic river. In the far north of Russia’s Siberia region near the city of Norilsk lies the Daldykan River. But it’s no ordinary waterway - the river has recently changed to a disturbing bright red hue, to the horror of local residents. The bizarre colour was first spotted where the river nears a metal factory called the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant. http://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/708450/Why-mysterious-daldykan-river-suddenly-turned-disturbing-colour-blood-siberia
Forever Cursed Posted September 8, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2016 They will probably discover that due to the climate change ice is melting and the run off is over red clay and emptying into the river .........

Forever Cursed Posted September 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 8, 2016 They had that red rain in Central America that turned out to be a single celled organism that turned their water red for 3 weeks ..... maybe this is another case ... although the color seems a bit more clay in color then the other one .... sucks to have to drink out of that river ......
Claire. Posted September 8, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 8, 2016 There's a possibility that heavy metal processing is the culprit. The Siberian Times reported on Sept. 7 that the Daldykan River near the city of Norilsk had turned the color of blood, with locals pointing fingers at the nearby Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant, owned by the company Norilsk Nickel. In fact, a broken pipeline at the plant may be the culprit, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources. The company, however, has denied any accidental discharge of pollutants. Source: Live Science
Sundew Posted September 8, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 8, 2016 45 minutes ago, White Unicorn said: That or red algae Possible. I once had a ten gallon freshwater quarantine tank turn completely blood red over night. I suspect it was caused by Dinoflagellates, no chemicals of any kind had been added to the tank and the filters were running. It was really amazing to see, the water was still clear, only red. The very next day the tank was normal again, so whatever organism bloomed also died out just as quickly. In the case of the Russian river I would think pollution is more likely the answer but in fact it could be a combination of both, just the right amount of nutrients in the water could cause an algae bloom.

Codenwarra Posted September 9, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 9, 2016 (edited) Microorganisms or metal compounds from the nickel plant. Or Photoshop. Edited September 9, 2016 by Codenwarra I had another brilliant idea!
+DieChecker Posted September 9, 2016 #11 Share Posted September 9, 2016 Ewwwww...... That sure is a bright red color. Iron doesn't usually make water that bright. Usually not clay either. Could be algae, or microorganisms, but I haven't seen such a thing where an entire river is turned red like this. Generally if a lake is affected it could do that, but if this river comes out of a lake, it must be a tremendously large lake.
Chaldon Posted September 9, 2016 #12 Share Posted September 9, 2016 Usually such an extensive pollution could be caused by capping (or whatever it's called) from gold mining being dumped back into water. Red algae is unlikely so far north and one river only, as seen on the satellite image.
+DieChecker Posted September 9, 2016 #13 Share Posted September 9, 2016 (edited) Here is something similar. http://all-that-is-interesting.com/the-red-river Looking at the river on Google Earth, it appears to only run between two land locked lakes. So no fear of the pollution going further then that. Bad enough as it is though. Edited September 9, 2016 by DieChecker
Chaldon Posted September 9, 2016 #14 Share Posted September 9, 2016 (edited) Aha! So it's really the nickel factory! It's mentioned in the link that in Sudbury, Ontario it was the case. And now in Norilsk they deny everything. So typical for my poor country. Edited September 9, 2016 by Chaldon
mythical enchant Posted September 10, 2016 #15 Share Posted September 10, 2016 This is due to a special algae known as Gonyaulax that makes the sea red when they are multiplied to great numbers on getting favourable conditions............

Yeah, but facts won't get in the way of the believer. Although there are other rivers and falls that turn red every year (due to natural phenomena), and so far Armageddon has not occurred...people are still gonna go with "it's a sign!"
