Could robots force a universal basic income ?

I'm assuming the income from the government would be taxable, because otherwise wage-earners and the rich would have to subsidize the program. That would definitely not be popular, and in fact, politically impossible. So it comes down to the government giveth, and the government taketh away.

And, if it happened in America, the displaced would still have to find work, I'd think. $24-25,000 a year is poverty level, isn't it? Or close to it?

25,000 and going up.  if they raise minimum wage up to 15 an hour many jobs will be lost to automation.  grocery stores are already toying with it.  2500 is more than they give for social security and they take some of that away to pay for medicare.

As robots automate more and more jobs, will the government be forced to pay everyone a basic wage ?

Sparta makes its return as the helots (robots) do all the work.

Allowing the people to spend their days practising Democracy or being soliders (UAV drone controllers). They all get an equal share of land and income.

I wonder what will happen when technology reaches the point that robots can pretty much do jobs like humans or better because It won't get tired and the performance will always be high. constant and no need to sleep. Stores would always be open, with robot security guards and such. People would just stop working in general and... what?

Well the Government would just have to steal from those companies the same as what they were paying the displaced workers.Do you think that might work? Or, Maybe just take all that wealth from Elon and spread it around!

The federal reserve has been giving literally trillions of dollars to the bond and equity markets over the last 8 years and made corporations either wealthier or stabilized them. I don't see why the Federal Reserve does not give everyone(excluding the top 10%) a $500 a month cheque. They have literally socialized the equity and bond markets lol. It is amazing to watch... Amazing in a very bad way.

universal pay...sounds perfect, then more people will be able to buy more things, taxes, for example, john doe gets a truck, taxes, gas-taxes, parts etc....taxes, insurance, regristrations, taxes, more food, clothes, etc, more taxes,, the actual amount giving will be low, more businesses will be made to keep up with demand, busisness tax, exployees, more taxes, more credit cards, taxes, more homes, taxes, it would boost alot

how would the governments generate money to just give it away?

there would also have to some sort of population control. it would cause every poor nation's population to flood to america in hopes of partaking. what would we do? just allow unchecked immigration? unchecked population growth? the muslims and poor people would just start cranking out babies. there would have to be a offspring limit. one thinks of the movie Gattica.

I was thinking more along the lines of WALL-E.

As long as there are some governments willing and able to pay LESS for a human child to do that of a robot...

Here is how it will work... We will never have a classless society, but instead of wages people will be taxed on their footprints. Meaning the ammount of waste an individual produces. People who do work will be allowed to produce more waste and therefore will

Actually the total cost of a child laborer is more than a robot. You dont need to water or feed a robot, if it breaks an arm you just replace it.

Its more likely that currency will lose value, than likely for there to be a manditory wage. Meaning people wont need money because things are being made for almost nothing. Dont need money you dont need a wage.

Currently, child labor is far cheaper in all respects than robots in certain industries.

It's possible to make it work but would be a complex system and alot of fight to get it accepted. It could make the Republican trickle down  effect work! It's like the temporary boost of the economy in all local regions when Bush gave a $400 credit just for filing a tax return, even to low income seniors who hadn't filed for years.

Back in college economics, I remember being taught that for every job lost 7 other people lose there job because of that person's spending and loss of taxes being paid. Lower income jobs are the first to go. We faced this economic spiral down because of automation and cheaper labor in other countries for many years.

Tax system on robots could find a middle ground because more unemployed people would be buying the companies' products and paying into the tax system locally in areas that were left behind.

It would be a most difficult thing to make it accepted at first as to what would be a minimum pay for the people out of work or on assistance but it could be the wave of a future change that really could work IMO.

All these extra mouths would be seen by the wealthy elite as unnecessary and in order to qualify for benefits you will have to agree to sterilization.  Eventually there are about 100,000,000  cyber augmented people world wide living like super powered gods and those still alive will wonder why they needed so many people in the past on the very rare occasion that they bother to think about it at all.

Chicken and egg. No jobs, no customers, nothing for robots to build ...

Which is why we need Eddie Van Halen ... which is why we need a triumphant video!
