Well the western portion is what would make it one of the most ambitious construction project in history , probably right up there with the three gorges dam, but with determination and TNT it could be done right?

Honestly, I don't know. It would probably depend a lot on what's under there along the border. Some stuff would be easier to build with or not. Like how we figure out if a building foundation can go somewhere or not- but canals are a much bigger amount of figuring to do.

I'm sure they could, but it'd be a pretty big commitment, requiring a 24 hour round the clock deployment, and it'd no doubt cost a packet. Besides, that's what the Border Patrol and Law Enforcement use already, isn't it.

I'm not sure, I'm just saying the military could do patrols along the border instead other areas, if practical for the military. Obviously they need to focus on what they are trained to do.

He's also bombed more nations than any other US president outside of ww2 and given more corporate welfare than any other president.

Im really confused why republicans hate him so much.

Before the American War in Vietnam, I studied in America, and that was the American name I used (back then Asians in the States tended to adopt American names to make things easier -- nowadays this isn't much done because of nationalist attitudes in Asia that have since developed.

I also worked for over twenty years for an American corporation, traveling a lot in North America.  Then I became a specialist in American policy advice and have now pretty much retired, although my company (very nice of them) keeps me on the payroll for occasional consultations.

Alot of people were actually forced to do it. My grandma Mee-Lin was renamed Elsie by the school because they thought it was necessary.

Defending this country?  Yes, practicing that along the border is a great idea.  I think every state National Guard should take a turn at it, too.

If we stopped meddling in other nations we could bring our troops home and use them for their initial intended purpose DEFENSE.

You wouldn't mind the posse comitatus violation?  That's quite progressive of you.

What he said was, or to the effect of, "They're sending their bad people, their rapists and murderers, here". It's quite a difference from saying that "they're rapists", which is what the Media immediately assumed he said.

Do you mean interfering in every other country's affairs and overthrowing the governments of any country that doesn't do what you tell them to? The Russkies have to be prevented from doing that, so America needs to be the global policeman to make sure they don't? Certainly America has never ever imagined doing anything remotely like that, has it.

He actually did say they're rapists.

who says it needs to be a violation. We have bases all over the world that could be relocated to the southern US border in regular intervals. That would cut the area CBP has to cover thereby maximizing their resources and the military would simply be protecting military lands rather than patrolling the US.

Ah, so, it's okay to side-step posse comitatus. Gotcha! :tu:

Works out well for the military too.  You get to build a ton of useless bases out in the middle of nowhere, keep that military spending nice and high.

Here's my solution: Build the biggest friggin wall the worlds ever seen. Make it huge and beautiful and call it 'the great wall of friendship.' Then we can attract tourists and sell tickets. You guys dropped the berlin wall reference but missed the china one (which I do think is more appropriate).

Joking aside, I'm mixed on this idea. It's not my forte' and frankly I just don't know enough about the situation to have an intelligent opinion. Would be nice though if we could compromise, maybe build a percentage of said wall and see the effect this has on immigration. I just don't know. Nobody wants illegal immigrants (regardless of country of origin) but throwing money at the problem isn't gonna make it go away.

And regarding mexico 'fixing it's own problems' that's just not a reasonable answer. That's like saying Somalia needs to pull it together. Mexico is absolutely vicious and when a country is in such a state of affairs it's not something that's gonna be fixed anytime soon.

The purpose of the act – in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807 – is to limit the powers of the federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States.

Again, Republicans show they don't really want a limited federal government. They want a more powerful one, and to use it to impose their will on the rest of America (which, incidentally, didn't vote for this).

Actually, in my younger days, I entertained the idea of America building a huge (sorry, "yuuge") canal running all along the border, like a modern day Panama Canal, but twice as large.

But then I learned about thing like topography, and gravity, and economics...

Also, there's a decent chance my plan would flood about 2/3'rds the state of Nevada.

One thing I have entertained for several years is the idea of an American Foreign Legion.

Think about it:  we would have a way to vet immigrants for multiple years, make sure they come into the country with a firm grasp of culture, language, and skills...

and: we would have a ready, first-strike, military force to send in when something needs to be done, but we don't really want to commit to anything too drastic.

That way, if they win, it's a victory for the U.S., and of they lose...well, they weren't really us, you know?

I'm not sure about building bases all over the border, however with 13,000,000 illegals in this country how hard would it be for terrorist to fly into Mexico, then sneak across the border, the same as 13,000,000 have done? Until the wall is built, the military could conduct exercises along the border with a valid reasoning of national security. Not necessarily acting as law enforcement.  They could warn border patrol of incoming activity.

I think they have been using that tactic for manyyears, notably in Afghanistan in the 80s and Syria currently. "Deniability"> They're America's assets when they do what America wants them to do, and Terrorists when they start acting for themselves.

Well, sure, but now it can also be used to control immigration and still project power out into the world.  It's win/win.

Here's what confuses me about the wall, and maybe someone can provide some insight.  The Rio Grande River provides a 1,200 mile natural border between Texas and Mexico.  Much of that land is owned by cattle ranchers and farmers that use the river for their livestock and crops.  So...where does the wall go?  In the middle of the river?

Funny... I was imagining something like the LA River

no need for wall on the river, just mics on the bottom in case someone swims over, or drug sub tries to get in, that and few pt boats ready.
