GlitterRose Posted December 1, 2016 #253 Share Posted December 1, 2016 In exchange for allowing United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought. Just a short few months ago, Trump was pledging to force United Technologies to “pay a damn tax.” He was insisting on very steep tariffs for companies like Carrier that left the United States and wanted to sell their foreign-made products back in the United States. Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! How’s that for standing up to corporate greed? Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States. Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives. Even corporations that weren’t thinking of offshoring jobs will most probably be re-evaluating their stance this morning. And who would pay for the high cost for tax cuts that go to the richest businessmen in America? The working class of America. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=newssearch&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiP667zl9PQAhXB34MKHeKsD60QuogBCB8oBDAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fposteverything%2Fwp%2F2016%2F12%2F01%2Fbernie-sanders-carrier-just-showed-corporations-how-to-beat-donald-trump%2F&usg=AFQjCNFD8zV4bt1dOuhSBqazVHJ4MLicjw&sig2=IEuWtGxlCpZt5AIHzuz7RQ
GlitterRose Posted December 1, 2016 #254 Share Posted December 1, 2016 It's a coup... Trump is putting together what will be the wealthiest administration in modern American history. His announced nominees for top positions include several multimillionaires, an heir to a family mega-fortune and two Forbes-certified billionaires, one of whose family is worth as much as industrial tycoon Andrew Mellon was when he served as treasury secretary nearly a century ago. Rumored candidates for other positions suggest Trump could add more ultra-rich appointees soon. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=newssearch&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwi2l-iXmtPQAhVMzoMKHf5CB64QuogBCDEoATAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fnews%2Fwonk%2Fwp%2F2016%2F11%2F30%2Fdonald-trump-is-assembling-the-richest-administration-in-modern-american-history%2F&usg=AFQjCNEpGgaK1Xj0K1IgDJPDQ76Hu_WiSw&sig2=aOJNbR9draTSj5XEuAZkpA&bvm=bv.139782543,d.cGw

You believe, then, that not paying taxes twice on a product, or being able to deduct the cost of drilling, or writing down capitalized assets (which every kind of company does - amortization) is "getting billions of our money every year?" Also, I'd argue that "killing other people" is not only THE major reason to have a government at all, but also quite likely is the actual genesis of the idea of governance itself. Energy subsidies are measures that keep prices for consumers below market levels or for producers above market levels, or reduce costs for consumers and producers. Energy subsidies may be direct cash transfers to producers, consumers, or related bodies, as well as indirect support mechanisms, such as tax exemptions and rebates, price controls, trade restrictions, and limits on market access. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_subsidies You believe in that? Quote Also, I'd argue that "killing other people" is not only THE major reason to have a government at all, Oh terrific. The gobmint sounds excused again. Quote but also quite likely is the actual genesis of the idea of governance itself. Not the US govt. The Constitution predates our govt and its genesis was to put limits on power. Now we just ignore it like govt has no limits. The essence of govt is force. If you have to force someone to do something, then they wouldn't do it freely if they weren't forced to.
Harte Posted December 9, 2016 #269 Share Posted December 9, 2016 The essence of government is to ensure the continued existence of the population it serves, and by extension protect the property of those people as well, assuming they have any. Otherwise, there is no need for government at all. Government has evolved since it was first invented in prehistory, but that essence is still there. In the U.S., the protection of personal property (i.e. land, etc.,) has been recognized as a primary purpose of government but the protection of the people goes far further back than that. That's not to say that there is agreement on the means used to achieve that aim. Harte

The reason our govt was founded, the reason the govt is authorized with powers, the reason it exists in the first place and enjoys any powers at all, was to protect our rights. When the means violate our rights, it's working against its reason for existing. If we didn't exist there'd be no need for rights either, so by extension, of course there'd be no need for govt. Show me where it says in the Constitution that the President can tell individual companies what to do. I dare you.

Harte "We have to stop our companies" is worse than telling them what to do, it's forcing them what to do. Trump says he stopped Ford from going to Mexico and you don't believe him? Then he didn't stop Ford from going to Mexico, and he doesn't deserve the credit he gives himself. Politicians controlling companies isn't capitalism, it's authoritarian statism with a big whiff of fascism. Now the default excuse mill will once again infer that Trump is dreaming and just talking smack again and he only thinks he tells them what to do. More delusional than effectual? Perhaps this time they're right. But fixing prices to control the behavior of companies? Say goodbye to free market capitalism then. I can tell you won't miss it. But I'd rather live in a free country where ego trips who think they know better don't run our economy for us.
