Yes, it is now. Before the New Deal, it was quite a different system.

Unfettered capitalism might have never existed. Before the New Deal we definitely had reforms pushed by many including Horace Mann, Mother Jones, Upton Sinclair and events such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and even Abolition.

But good to know where you draw the line. I suppose you would dispense with the very socialistic Social Security.

Nope. That's the thing about Socialism. Once people are use to it, or are born into the system, it's just another fact of life.

Well, that's a load of garbage. Your politics are nakedly obvious. Own them or shut up.

This is the mindset that does not allow centrism or across the aisle bipartisanship.

You are one of the equations in a problem you detest. Take yourself out of it or quit stitching about the Left.

Unfettered capitalism would be impossible.  Who would enforce contracts?

I think the best ideology is pragmatism -- whatever works best in a given situation.

Google the term "politics makes strange bedfellows" and expand your horizons. Just because the dems and I happen to be in agreeance on the Trumpster and his cabal of oligarchs doesnt meant im one of them.

If it walks like duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it shouldn't be surprised to be bagged for dinner. If you haven't the guts to take a stand, you stand for nothing and what you say means even less.

What matters to people is delivery, not how it's delivered, generally done by comparing the lives of parents to one's own life.  Socialist societies who don't deliver come under pressure and must either resort to terror (Mao) or capitalist methods camouflaged as steps on the way to utopia.

What about public works? How dare they use my taxes to build and maintain roads. That should be the job of private corporations and all roads should be tolled. Damn the pinko commies for doing this to our once great society. Now these snivelling kids think they are entitled to just whiz right past me and go on about their business.

Are you done drinking the koolaid in your party of one?

On many issues i do lean to the left. Im also fiercely pro gun and states rights' so im a mixed bag. Regardless that has nothing to do with party affiliation. Thats an important distinction because of the garbage we have happening right now. Both parties are the true enemies of freedom. Both parties work together AGAINST you and I. They are truly two sides of the same dirty, dirty coin.

In the great scheme of things this is but an interlude where the Republicans will be allowed to show that even with complete power they can't get anything done.  The problem is that the Democrats have already shown this.

See what I mean? You feel entitled to criticize the way you do, but are dismayed and outraged when Hillary's "Basket of Deplorables" use precisely the same rhetoric against you. So please don't preach to me about polarizing politics.

I am not the one fishing and deboning about it now. You cannot choose a side, harass the other side and then complain about a war.

Of course they are; that's always been the nature of party politics--ugly and vicious. Lincoln, himself, got into a fistfight, in his younger years, on stage with a political opponent he was debating!

Then why are you complaining! Look in the mirror, for Chrissakes. If you can't take it, you shouldn't dish it out.

The latest: Sessions to respond in writing to questions over Russia contacts.

Quote

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will reply in writing to Senate Democrats' questions about his meetings with Russia's ambassador last year, the Justice Department said on Friday after a top Republican denied Democrats' request for a public hearing.

Nine Democratic senators sent a letter earlier Friday asking Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley to call Sessions before his panel to explain his failure until this week to disclose his contacts with the Russian ambassador during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The letter came a day after Sessions, the country's top justice official and a key ally of Republican President Donald Trump, removed himself from any investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the election.

Grassley replied that he had no plans for a hearing.

Public works, postal service... that's not socialism. Those fit squarely under general welfare. Those things are detrimental to the flow of commerce and the general well being of how things work in this modern country. Taxes and government are a necessary thing but not everything taxes are used for is socialism. That's a stupid strawman meant to make those who rail against Marxist socialism look stupid and uninformed.
