Why Itchiness Is Contagious

Mice, just like humans and monkeys, will start itching if they see a compatriot scratching itself, a new study finds.

The finding is the first evidence that "socially contagious itching" exists in rodents, the researchers said. Moreover, the researchers' neural analysis revealed that socially contagious itching is hardwired into the mouse brain.

Many social animals start to feel itchy after watching one of their fellows scratch, and scientists now have a better understanding of why an itch can spread through a group.

I thought it was yawning that was the most common  socially contagious behaviour/reaction. I cant say that I start scratching myself when I see someone else doing it. I'm more likely to starts scratching myself if I see lots of bugs, or insects in a movie-clip or something.
