Is North Korea really a problem?

Well if I wasn`t testing a WMD on people I would have set one off about 20 miles away and said look what we can do. It would have been hands up with out blowing up people that had nothing to do with the war.

Maybe you should bone up on the history before posting something as ignorant as the above.    There were military and societal reasons that the bomb was used militarily rather than demonstrated and the fact that they had to use a second bomb to convince the Japanese to surrender proves that the decision was the correct one, especially considering the fact that we only had two bombs.  In fact, the Japanese military did not want to surrender even if we bombed all their cities and Truman wanted the death to end.

Oh wait the U.S. has killed 500 thousand civilians in the ME so it`s normal I guess. Stop being led by the nose by those that profit from war.

Oh please!

Sad but true Silver Thong. The military/civilian casualty projections were off the scale. The bomb actually saved millions of lives and preserved the Japanese people and their culture. The Japanese people and military never actually surrendered. They were ordered to acquiesce and to "endure the unendurable" by their Emperor. The horrors of radiation were barely understood, then, if at all. To the military, they were dropping the mother of all bombs, that's all. All the great powers were striving to get the bomb. We just happened to get it first. I think that worked out for the best. It hasn't been used since.

Apparently reality and silver are strangers to each other.   Not a real bright guy to begin with he further cripples himself by being indoctrinated in the worst of what the left hate-America crowd has to offer.

That tends to be true but we have a couple of decade history of trying the carrot approach with this regime.  They take what's offered and keep their promises until they need more stuff, then repeat.  Except they have been making steady progress during that time.  To talk with him now, before he does anything to merit it, would be a mistake and only continue the errors of the past.  If he's allowed to make the world dance to his tune when he's just building a bomb, imagine what he'll be like when he has one ready to go.  China can get on board or get out of the way.  Fat boy's going down.  After he's assumed room temperature I'm sure there will be world wide condemnation of evil, heartless, warmongering America.  An den?  An what?

I don't know what then.... the main question would be how it would all play out with China I suppose..

I'm guessing that perhaps although deals? have been done with North Korea over the years - Trump
probably wants to give it a go himself and take the lead rather than just follow what has gone before
in Obama's time...?

I was at a May Day Fair yesterday and saw someone I hadn't seen for a few years - we had a bit of a chat
and at some point the nuclear thing and NK came up - she and her husband know someone who lives
in South Korea, not far from the border with the North - about 30 miles and apparently the person they
know in South Korea isn't concerned with what's going on and just brushes it off saying it's just the same
as what it's always like with North Korea - how they normally behave -- and they didn't seem to be hyped up
about it all at all..

so make of that what you will ---

By introducing new chips to the table THAAD, stealth bombers, the battlegroup, Trump is giving himself bargaining leverage with the Chinese. I rather doubt he'd consider any kind of agreement with Kim alone.

That's not a fact.  That's a conjecture.   And the x-axis is only a few days long.   So what's the goddamned hurry?

Which of course is a great reason to support Donald Trump!

Just engage in diplomacy with North Korea, don't bend over and make an ass out of himself by butt kissing.  BTW  If Kim refuses this brown nosed invitation, Trump will come out looking so weak and lame.

Trump thinks he can make deals with anyone anywhere at any time.   I don't want to pay for Kim's carrot cake, whatever form that may be take.   If someone wants to do diplomacy with Kim it should come from South Korea or at least someone else in the neighborhood.   The media's fake kool aid fear stories about Kim's ICBMs however dictate our smaller brains to think they're an actual threat and so the neighbors get cart blanch excused from having to do anything along the lines of leadership.

I didn't take it as 'butt kissing' - but your President can't do a thing right in your eyes...?

If he goes down the military path he's wrong... if he goes down the diplomacy path he's wrong -

I know you'd rather he didn't do anything and left it to his neighbours but it all seems to be about
negotiations and deals with the Chinese - ? - oh I don't know I'm getting tired now and it's nearly
bed time --- :sleepy:

anyway Kim's going to have beautiful chocolate cake not carrot cake - but it might be weaponized .. :w00t:

He might start a bloody war.  A major, major war.   Butt Kiss and John Wayne are like two bookends without any books.

My story is I'd talk to N Korea like I'd talk to ANYONE.  It's stupid not to talk like you don't have a tongue in your mouth or a brain in your head.   I'm sure you agree.  The only thing we have to disagree on here is that maybe you like kissing Kim's ass.  I don't.

I suppose we could rely on Dennis Rodman.  He asserts that Kim Jong-un really wanted to talk with Obama.

Trump wanting to meet Kim Jong-un and see the cut of his jib seems reasonable.

Silver's idea was shared by the scientists who created the bomb.  How bright were they?

And there you go again, accusing someone else of being the Left again like you always do, when you're the one in the bed with it, like you usually are.

This time you're with Harry Truman.  Not Dwight Eisenhower.   Ya Lefty, your avatar is one of the most liberal actors in America.   Good choice!

It did not need to be used twice and defending the use of wmd`s is a bit sad

It had to be used twice and it came close to needing to be used even more along with an invasion of Japan.  Even after using both atomic bombs, the Russians declaring war on Japan, and a looming American invasion of Japan the heads of the Imperial Japanese government still couldn't come to an agreement on if they should surrender or continue fighting.  Between August 12 to the 15 the pro war elements even attempted a coup to stop the surrender and continue the war.

How exactly were both atomic bombs not needed and before anyone tries to argue that the Japanese government was willing to surrender one should look up the conditions they wanted for their surrender such as no foreign occupation of Japan, Japan handling it's own disarmament with no foreign over sight, all war crime trials involving Japanese being handled solely by the Japanese government, that Imperial Japanese would be able to hold on to some or all land it conquered from Asian countries, that it would return European colonies in Asia under the condition the Europeans would grant the colonies independence, and that the emperor remained.

That's not right.  Japan's intended outcome of war with the US was never conquering the US or defeating the US militarily in total war, it was only to bring the US to the table to make terms.   The coup didn't target the Emperor, and ultimately it wasn't the willingness of the Japanese govt, it was the willingness of the Emperor.  There was no movement within the govt to kill Hirohito.

Keeping the Emperor was the only intractable condition they would insist upon.  What you just provided was a laundry list of everything they would have wanted to ask for, not the list of requirements to make peace.   Their navy and air force were destroyed sans more of the same suicide attacks we'd already seen.   Their industrial centers were completely destroyed by conventional strategic bombing that was far more destructive than the two atomic bombs which received all the press and which subsequently cause people like you to assign them too much weight.

Armchair quarterbacking death tolls as if Japan would never surrender isn't the "reality" people like Merc think it is.   He's pouring the Japanese kool aid of a glorious national suicide and Japanese women hitting GI Joe with bamboo sticks in their kitchens.   So if you presume the Japanese war propaganda was true, then yeah....

But how "bright" is that?

First off Vietnam has nothing to do with this and second do you have any understanding at all of the areas that Japan conquered and the patch work of European colonies throughout south east Asia.

I must admit I agree there. Surely a bit of chocolate cake and a few protestations of admiration and friendship, however fake, are preferable to, say, millions of civilian casualties and cities being reduced to smoking wastelands?
