Space Commander Travis Posted August 10, 2017 #402 Share Posted August 10, 2017 (edited) SMERSH, the you might think implausibly named Soviet Department of Fiendish Things that was, in the earlier books at least when Ian Fleming still tried to provide at least a veneer of plausibility, before all the business about supervillains in volcanoes and what have you, the main opponent of agent "James Bond", did actually exist. Its name derives from SMERt' SHpionam (Смерть шпионам ) and its Motto really was Death to Spies! Sadly however, there is no organisation known as SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion). Oh wait, yes there is. it's called the U.S. Government.

Space Commander Travis Posted August 15, 2017 #412 Share Posted August 15, 2017 It is a little known fact, particularly if you read left wing newspapers, that fares on the supposedly "privatised" railways are in fact set by the Government. acute Posted August 15, 2017 Author #413 Share Posted August 15, 2017 (edited) From the Parliament website: "Around 45 per cent of fares are subject to regulation (by the Secretary of State in England, Welsh Minister in Wales and Scottish Ministers in Scotland). Regulated fares are set by a formula based on the RPI figure for the previous July, and for many years with a degree of flexibility (called the ‘fares basket’ or ‘flex’). All other fares are set commercially by train operators." Edited August 15, 2017 by acute .

Galactic Goatman Posted August 17, 2017 #415 Share Posted August 17, 2017 The Mola Mola, largest bony fish, and butt of many marine Biologists jokes. Why? because these guys cannot swim very well, are kinda dumb, chewtoys of seals and sharks and its often joked the only reason they haven't died out is because they lay a stupendous number of eggs, more than nearly any other animal.

Ah yes... the PC PC's! I believe there are only 2 sexes at birth. Even an Intersex state renders an M or F identifier, chromosomally speaking.

Space Commander Travis Posted August 18, 2017 #420 Share Posted August 18, 2017 From the department of "Can't sing, can't act, can dance a little" and "Guitar groups are on the way out", the review of the very fist episode of Star Trek to be broadcast, in September 1966, from Variety magazine: "Star Trek obviously solicits an all-out suspension of disbelief, but it won't work. Even within its sci-fi frame of reference it was a dreary mess of confusion, trudging on for a whole hour with hardly any relief from violence, killings, hypnotic stuff and a distasteful, ugly monster. By a generous stretch of the imagination, it could lure a small coterie of the smallfry in terms of audience ... The performers are in there pitching, but the odds are against them in all departments - script, direction and overall production. William Shatner appears wooden. Space Commander Travis Posted August 20, 2017 #422 Share Posted August 20, 2017 Some of those are a bit of a stretch, but I've got to give them credit for kloran. What about Klorets? (Mints they carry for when they feel they need their breath freshening. The same horrible stuff still comes out of their mouth, but at least it smells nice. )
Galactic Goatman Posted August 20, 2017 #423 Share Posted August 20, 2017 Sexton Beetles, these guys are known as "burying" beetles because they sniff out dead vertebrates and dig under them until the body has fallen into a pit, where the beetle lays its eggs and feeds its young on the decaying corpse.
