All sums of 9 to a certain power add up to 9 when added up in order.

For example 9^2= 81, 8+1=9

9^3=729, 7+2+9=18, 1+8=9

9^4=6561, 6+5+6+1=18, 1+8=9

9^5=59049, 5+9+4+9=27, 2+7=9

9^6=531441, 5+3+1+4+4+1=18, 1+8=9

Etc.

I discovered this playing with my calculator while bored in math class.

I figured the number 9 must really like itself.

And yet mathematicians KNOW they are equal. There's no mystery at all.

Just as equally, 1.99999... is the same number as 2.

Another interesting fact: Maths can prove that 0.9999... = 1 but it can't prove that 1= 0.9999...

Assume:

x= 0.999999

Therefore:

10x=9.9

Therefore:

10x-x = 9.9- 0.9

9.9-0.9=9

Therefore

9x=9

Therefore:

x (which is 0.999999)=1

I understand this works, but I thought it would be .0....1

I'm not sure if that number exists though.

All, I can think is, "How convenient keeping 10 so close number 9, how convenient......"

If we try the same thing with for example, .222...

x=.2...

10x=2.2...

10x=2+.2...

10x=2+x

9x=2

4.5x=1

then checking:

.2222222222*4.5=.999999999

So, in this case, it looks like the equation fails itself falling back on .9...

Some people argue that 0.99999... isn't exactly the same as 1 but that the two numbers "converge".

By the way, the distance between two consecutive 0.99 etc numbers gets ten times smaller each time, so 0.999 is ten times closer to 0.99 as 0.99 is to 0.9. So by thinking of that, you can see why 0.99... recurring is the same as 1.

In 1979, Columbo (the TV series) spawned a poorly received spin-off which followed the day to day adventures of the lieutenant's wife.  Kate Mulgrew (who would later become Captain Janeway in Star Trek Voyager) played the role of Kate Columbo, a news reporter who solves crimes whilst bringing up her daughter.  It was never well received and when the ratings began to buckle, Mrs. Columbo became Mrs. Callahan - a woman who had recently divorced her husband.  The title of the flagging show was then changed from, Mrs. Columbo, into - Kate the Detective and before the shows death was finally renamed, Kate Loves a Mystery.

So I can take it that you have seen the TV show and also didn't like it either.

No no no, just stating a fact about certain names, also to elaborate, that some with certain names , well they might have a hard time in life because of others before them with the same name not having the grandest of reputation.

Yes, have seen Columbo.
