I suppose you have the right to dislike anything you don't like.  I don't know what good it will do you except make you unfriendly and curmudgeonly (I love the English language for having a word like that).

I stopped smoking when I was in college in the States, a long time ago, but I never have been inclined to make an issue of others smoking around me -- I always considered that somewhat rude.  I suppose someone smoking around me is rude too, but it is not my business to judge others.  I have no problem with laws restricting smoking in public places, for the protection of public health.  That seems to me the best approach.

Still, here the issue is taxing cigarettes, a different matter.  High taxes on cigarettes, as I already posted but you didn't respond to, tend, if they exceed about ten percent, to make it profitable to bootleg, which profits organized criminals.   Intelligent tax law on consumables should always watch the black market and be sure the tax is not making the criminals rich.

I also have a freedom or political objection to government deciding one thing is a sin and another is okay and taxing them accordingly.  Governments should not make moral decisions.

Yes, not liking to smell cigarette smoke from other people makes me unfriendly. 

I hobeslt don't care what people do to themselves, with themselves around themselves or whatever ... none of my damn business ... until it affects me. Then I care, if that makes me a cumedgeon.... well as you say, it's a cool word.

Heres a weird thing.... "Light Cigarettes"... you know those ones that 'seem' healthier as lower tar/nicotine levels....well....seems they are no healthier after all

i used to pay  $12 a pack last time i smoked, it was 9 years ago. that is in new york city, if you go to Virginia price  is less than half

 I take it you don`t live in a city. Clean air lol somedays the news says it`s over cast and I can tell it`s smog not clouds.

It`s a BS tax, here you can smoke in your home and car minus children in the car. It`s the same as the Carbon tax. It`s a money grab.

It`s a joke. the tax will not make people smoke less. Nor will a carbon tax make people drive less. I think the left needs to be called out on there theft of the people. Here they call it a sin tax to punish those that don`t conform. Hmmmm why not tax goverment jets 100 percent and politicians a 100 percent on the limo rides. Nope they get a free ride.

my wife told me an anecdote from ussr,

Interesting. New Zealand has been heavily taxing cigarettes and tobacco for a few years and currently 17% of adults smoke, of which 15% smoke regularly. In 10 years, smoking rates for youth aged between 15-17 has dropped by 10%. So it's worth doing.

there is no evidence that youth did not start smoking due to higher tax, i'm sure anti tobacco campaign did a lot more to prevent kids from starting,  actually youth is less likely to smoke in usa as well, yet price bumps in usa mostly local

The governments seem to be using typical methods of 'drug pushing' where the pusher gets the victim to try it, then when they're addicted, up the prices and make a hefty income.

Even Ronald Reagan and doctors advertised the pleasure and benefits of smoking tobacco.

Plenty of ads from the past on youtube.

The mind truly boggles:))))

I think it's a good thing they've raised up the prices, but I think they should out and out ban smoking in public. And only in your own home you should be able to smoke. What's more they should raise up the prices so it's so expensive no one will buy them.

the biggest smoke polluters in open/public spaces are all the cars/buses and taxis.....so ban them too or triple the price to use them.. and I may agree

Oh and lets stop all the airplanes pumping exhaust crap into our common airspaces....oh but that wont happen will it?  So lets continue breathing aviation fuel exhaust too

Yes and no. Like what was posted before me, you just have to be far enough away from a public entrence. Pretty soon we will see smoking in back allies like heroin addict.  I drive by my local pubs and I always see smokers on the sidewalk smoking. Sometimes I`m one of them. I don`t go to the bar to much anymore because a beer and a ciggaret to me go hand in hand, but thats just me.

So you want to use tax dollars to tell people what to do and force them into submition with a bullcrap tax, wow Maybe we should ban smoking and drinking altogether. We know what happened the last time they tried that, crime went up due to smuggling. It`s not cheap keeping someone in jail for a non crime. Plus the tax`s on smokes and booze more than pays for any heathcare cost at it`s current rate.
