One of the funniest things I saw many times was my grandma. Her phone number was one digit off from Zellers an old version of wallmart. She would pick up the phone and would spend 5 min with the person trying to explain she was not the Zellers store.

Funny this came up.  I got my cell phone number back in 2002.  I immediately began receiving messages for a person named Andrea.  The messages were being left by Andrea's mother.  After a couple weeks Andrea's mom was super p***ed that she wasn't returning her calls and the messages she was leaving become nastier and nastier.  I finally had to call Andrea's mom to inform her that this wasn't Andrea's number. Every once in a while after that I'd get the occasional message from Andrea's mom until it quit about a year after I got that number.  Until yesterday!  Andrea's mom left several nasty messages and texts because Andrea had not called her for the 4th of July. If my mom talked to me that way maybe I wouldn't call her back either. It's kind of funny that 15 years later it sounds like neither Andrea nor her mother has changed.

I've had several weird phone occurrences. Years ago, I was fooling around with automatic writing. Naturally, when playing with such means as to "communicate with the other side" I always ask for my dad to talk to me. I made the request and seconds later, my phone rang. Caller ID said out of area. It was late at night and my mom often called late from a different state. But, when I answered, it was a whispery voice with tons of static. I heard in almost a stage whisper, "I love you", then static and the call disconnected. Do I think it was my dad? I honestly couldn't say, but it did give me pause in light of the activity I was doing prior. 

Another from years ago: again, it was late at night. (my ex husband worked nights and I am a night owl anyway, so I was fully awake) the phone rang and the caller ID was kind of going wonky and it was just flashing (000)000-0000. I thought it odd but electronics do stupid things sometimes. When I answered, there was nothing at first, but then there was this sound.. Like an intake of breath but drawn out and overly guttural. Then, this menacing laugh. I was like, "haha very funny, great prank. Have a good night a**h**e". A male voice growled and said, "it's not a joke" and laughed. It was unnerving, and I hung up. The phone started ringing repeatedly after that, each time flashing the same sequence of numbers. I finally turned off the ringer. I wasn't exactly wanting to hear what this guy would say if I had answered again. 

And the last one involves my last mobile phone. I had had it for a few months. It worked great. No issues with it to speak of. One day I was just playing a game on my phone and the phone keypad popped up. It dialed 666 by itself and sent. I quickly hit end because I obviously had not dialed. It happened again the next day. And then about a week later. It continued to do that on its own every so often. There was no pattern to it. It happened at various times of the day and night. Every time I would simply end the call. I joked that my phone was possessed to a few friends within the first few months that it did it. But, it became a normal thing. I didn't discuss it with anyone after that initial few months, once the novelty of it wore off. About nine months after it started doing that, it became more rare to happen and I had met my fiancé. I never told him about it, nor did I ever tell his children. About a year after we became a couple, I bought a new phone and gave my old one to his daughter. About a month after I gave it to her, I asked her how she was liking the phone and she said, "oh I love it, it's great, but sometimes it creeps me out". I asked her why and she said that after she got it, the phone would dial 666 and send. She said that it kept doing it repeatedly and asked how to make it stop doing that. I had no response because I never figured out how to stop it when it was mine. We never did figure it out and not long after, she dropped the phone and shattered the screen. That is definitely one that still makes me scratch my head in wonder.

I got a text message one day while at work that said "Katrina needs to die"

Before I had much of a chance to think of what to do about it I got a call from someone screaming at me for not showing up at work. I googled both numbers. The 2nd one was a restaurant number and the 1st one was a number from the same city where this restaurant was but my number isn't anything even remotely similar to phone numbers used in that zone/city or anything nearby so I don't know why my number was being used by somebody there mistakenly even. 

 

Anywau, I told police but nobody named Katrina was missing and nothing ever came of it. I think and hope it was just somebody saying something dramatic to their friend about this "Katrina" person who had p***ed them off, like when people say "I'm gonna kill him!" And don't mean it literally...

not sure how the work absence call fit into it all. Around the same time I got a call from police of an entirely different city asking for me (or so I thought) by my full name so of course I say yes, it's me...

they say "you're wallet was found at such n such parking lot and turned in. We located you at this number using your ID"

They described the wallet as red fake leather and shiny and describe its contents. None of it is mine nor have I ever owned a red wallet. 

But they told me my current address and landline phone number and name...

I told them I never lost a wallet, it's right here beside me. They check the middle name of the person on this supposed ID and it's "Melissa" which is not my middle name. 

I was renting a room where I was living and sharing a landline NOT in my name so there is no way they could have looked me up. My name has never, in fact, as of yet been listed alongside a phone number online that I could access in any way (I've tried) and never publicly or in phone books...

none of it made sense. I told them to consider a possible case of identity theft. They tried to insist that this was my wallet and there was nobody else they could possibly contact about it. I told them I can't explain any of it any better than they could so keep it as evidence for whenever they get any ideas, and I wouldn't be taking a three hour trip to pick it up from a city I hadn't even been to in years...

I did look up the number they called from and it was in fact their police department. 

Still no idea what went on there. Maybe the wallet dropped in from an alternate universe where only a few slight details of my existence and ability to keep track of my wallet were altered lol

Im much more worried about attempted identity theft and consider myself lucky they got ahold of this supposed ID linked to me anyhow.

Some of these posts of creepy phone calls, I find fascinating. I can't really remember if I had gotten any that would be a big mystery to me, from any of the landlines, or cell phones I have had. I had also worked at a Walmart, and also it's number was one digit off from the pizza joint that was on the same street. So, we often had gotten calls from people ordering pizza. One time as the store's operator, I got a call from a lady who complained she didn't received her pizza and asked why, and I told her because she called the wrong joint. But the best part, was one of my co-workers took another call when she was the operator, and took a call from someone wanting to order a pizza to go. She didn't tell them it was a wrong number, took the order, told them it would be there in 30 minutes and if not, the pizza would be free, and she hung up. I thought that was classic. 

I have had solicitors calling our currant number asking for the previous occupants. The thing was, the number was changed from when they lived here, and I had asked how is it, they are calling someone who had a different phone number, but the same house previous to us? They didn't answer. 

I often wonder at the calls, where you hear something not meant for you. I remember calling the base military hospital to get some results, and when I was on hold, apparently I was faintly hearing another phone call from one military guy to his family. It was really sweet, but I felt very much a voyeur even though I didn't mean to. The connections were really very shoddy. So, I often wonder how some calls get through to people who don't happen to be the ones to purposely receive it. Heck, I have heard stories from friends who could hear telephone conversations on their baby monitors!

The giving of wrong numbers to people kind of annoy me. I got a call on my cell phone from a kid, who called and said 'hi' how I was doing and such. I'm like, 'who are you' and he was like noticing I didn't sound like the girl he was trying to call. He apologized and hung up. Afterwards, I noticed on my cell phone that I had received a couple of text messages from the same number of his, and he was assuming he was texting a girl. The texts started off innocent, asking how she was doing and wanting to get together. Then it was texts getting a little miffed about not answering him. (Of course he then decided to call and found it the number he had was the wrong number.) More than likely given to him to chase him off by this supposed girl. 

Other also than getting a call from some business, it was a voicemail, about someone asking us on our associations with a lady then were checking up on. This call came from out of state, and the name they said we didn't recognized, yet the caller said that our names were given to them by this person. To this day, I have no clue who this person was, and how they know us to give our names to someone. 

Other than that, (and a lot of phone calls that had just silence, ... which I would attribute to robo calls that had trouble connecting) not much really. Some of the posts here, I cannot really compete.

I have had a few creepy phone calls where when I picked up to answer there was heavy breathing on the other end and when I tried saying hello they would not say anything, in return.

I recently had an unexplained phone call offering assistance and legal representation for an accident that I'd had at work.  The thing is, I hadn't had an accident.... Is this some kind of telepathy, warning me of things to come????

if you are not, then let me explain....your number has been sold to a company (as Ruby has said above) trying to get money out of you, They are taking a chance that you had an accident. 

Here is what to do:

go to this site  and put the number in, you will see all the complaints by others who have also received those calls:

but before that, while you are on the phone to them, ask them "who sold you my number", they will either put the phone down, or will say " let me get my supervisor. Insist you do not want the supervisor, you want to keep speaking to them as they were the ones that phoned you, they will then put the phone down.

My husband takes their number and signs them up with a claims companies on line and requests a call back,

This thread reminds me of an occasion when my phone started to ring in the middle of the night many years ago, stating that the number calling was unknown. Once it stopped ringing, I realized that instead of an unknown number it showed my mom's number even though she told me she hadn't even been awake at that time since it was late.

Although there must be some explanation to that, it still was quite unsettling especially in the middle of the night.

As as former sleepwalker, I can see it happening. I would have been really freaked out if the call was coming from inside your house >.>

I had a kind of creepy phone call yesterday....I found out who it was but, to put it into context....

My sister and I haven't spoken since our mother's funeral - last November.  She has been trying to fleece me of my inheritance (via her solicitor) but has no grounds to do this and it is against our mother's wishes for me, as laid out in her will.  My brother is appalled by this as are my friends.

She is relying on those around her not knowing how low she will stoop i.e. what she is up to so I hit on the idea of informing her close friends of the situation, from my side (by email - not copying in my sister).  2 hours after those emails were sent I got a silent phone call....no answer to when I said 'hallo'.  After less than a minute I hung up and dialled 1471 which is how I know it was from her mobile phone!  Weird!  She has never done that before and it felt designed to be oppressive but that totally backfires since I don't have a victim's mentality.

It is most unlikely to be a pocket dialled incidence, i.e. this has NEVER happened EVER with her and, given the timing, it feels that it was indeed deliberate.

Sad when a sister becomes a stranger...she used to be a socialist and is now mercenary (in the truest sense of that word).

I got a call from a collection/credit agency that wanted to ask me questions about one of my neighbors. I told them to "get bent" and never call me again.

That is a typical collection/skip tracing technique.  They haven't been able to make contact with the customer/debtor, so they start trying to contact relatives and/or neighbors.  What they will typically do is try to get you to pass on a message to your neighbor.  The hope is that by doing so they'll get the customer/debtor to call them back out of anger or shame.

the weirdest call i ever got was from my friend who lived in america, (I’m in the uk)he passed away about 6 month before i got the call, it was on loud speaker and both me and my hubby heard it, he said "I’m sorry” and hung up... it was definitely him.

My friends and I use to make lots of prank calls back in the day before caller ID was the norm (yes we were annoying teenagers). But it was common for kids to do that.
