totally agree. We have a top end most modern navy in the world, its the numbers that's needed. just look at the pictures, Fifth Generation Aircraft Carriers, Fifth Generation fighter, worlds best Air Defence Destroyer. if the Type 26 programme wasn't delayed we'd have the worlds best Frigate also. not counting The Astute class Subs.

Increase Defence spending by 1% and we could have another Carrier or two, 6 Destroyers, 8 more frigates. another 7 seven Astute class.

Fantasy fleet.

  • 4 Carriers. Queen Elizabeth Class. (2 current. 2 new) all four to carry the F35B. (could install cats and traps on the batch 2's and go for the F35C)
  • 3 LHP .NEW Class. (similar to Australia's/Spains Canberra class/Juan Carlos Class)
  • 12 Type 45's, Batch 2's (6 current 6 new)
  • 12 Type 26's Frigate fully tooled up, towed array etc.. (8 currently planned, add 4 more to the build)
  • 10 Type 31's Light Frigate fully tooled up.
  • 14 Astute Class Subs. (7 current 7 new)
  • 4 Albion Class (Amphibious landing Dock) We have Albion & Bulwark now, build another 2.
  • 2 Hospital ship's. (used for war and disaster relief)

38 Major surface combatants alone with the Carriers, Destroyers, Frigates.

Biggest problem is manning.

I'd cut that down to three carriers (one under maintenance at any moment in time, the other two deployed), but increase the number of Destroyers and Frigates. I'd also commission a major Amphibious Assault Ship (in the style of the former HMS Ocean) to accompany the Landing Docks. It would also be invaluable - moreso than the Carriers - for disaster relief work. (volcano's and earthquakes etc)>

The last time we have 3 aircraft carriers we had 20 destroyers.

I think maybe we should get innovative too and make the first USCs - unmanned surface combatants.

Hope you don't mind me dropping this good news here, lads.  I'd create a thread but few would read it.

"BAE Systems will supply aircraft survivability equipment to a number of nations as part of US foreign military sales, the company announced on 18 November.

"The company has received contracts worth $71 million to deliver the AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System (CMWS) and associated equipment to the Netherlands, Spain, the UK and the United Arab Emirates."

You know, right now I would be mightily impressed if we went from three to six Type-45 Destroyers per aircraft carrier and made two extra carriers. In edition a load more frigates, and subs, and lets get our own fighter jets so we arent dependant on the USA and EU. They dont all have to be built overnight, it can be budgeted in over a period of 10 years

How about also making a couple of heavy cruisers? Russia has one so why dont we? The USA has several.

Must say they are pretty impressive pictures! Any docks in Wales where one of the may pop in? I remember the yanks were gonna put an aircraft carrier in Cardiff during the 2014 NATO conference. But the ship was way too big.

Fishguard port?

depending where about in Wales you live the best option might be visiting Portsmouth and doing the harbour tour.

HMS Prince of Wales is affiliated to the city of Liverpool and its expected she'll visit the city in mid 2020.

if your on twitter follow HMS QE & PoW.

as the Royal Navy use individual ship twitter accounts to announce port visits and if they'll be open to the public.

Well I would've thought there would be a naval base near the Milford Haven gas terminal, considering it's the biggest in Europe. Meh us Welsh are clearly not worthy of defending.:(
