Ashlee Simpson’s vocal malfunction

Making viewers long for the days of Janet Jackson's breast

user posted image

In this case, if Ashlee Simpson had flashed a breast, the FCC probably would have let it go.

After all, agencies of the federal government are there to protect the citizenry from any sort of injury or harm. Ashlee’s performance at halftime of Tuesday night’s Orange Bowl in Miami was about as close as a singer gets to committing aggravated assault. If she had only taken a lesson from Janet Jackson, the world would be talking today about the exposure of a boob rather than a fraud.

Much of the blame for this fiasco falls upon ABC, which hired this female Gilbert Gottfried to headline the halftime show for college football’s ultimate game, matching No. 1 USC against No. 2 Oklahoma. If the Sooners are despondent today after absorbing a 55-19 bludgeoning from the Trojans, they can take solace that each and every one of them could have taken the halftime stage dressed in drag and mooed like a cow and still induce fewer boos than Ashlee did Tuesday night.

First NBC invited Ashlee on “Saturday Night Live,” where she tried to fool the audience by lip-synching her way through a song, but failed. Now ABC. Don’t these networks have a Standards and Practices office anymore? Don’t they care about the welfare of our children? Don’t these network executives realize that a performance like Ashlee’s could produce imitators? Are they unconcerned about copycat Ashlees?

I watched the Orange Bowl Tuesday night, like millions of other Americans. The first half was all USC. When halftime arrived, I sat at the kitchen table, watching the TV from a room away. Because of the distance, the sound seemed lower than it was if I was right there in front of the screen. I started to enjoy a fine meal. I felt safe and secure.

When Ashlee came on and began to perform, though, I literally dropped my fork. Then I cupped my hands over my ears, but it didn’t help. Ashlee’s singing sounded like a cross between a political prisoner being tortured and a test of the Emergency Broadcast System.

I desperately searched for the remote so I could hit the mute button, but I must have misplaced it. But I also couldn’t believe that someone didn’t rush the stage and stop her. The local police. The FBI. Homeland security. Even an angry mob of vigilantes. Instead, they just let her keep going. I’ve never felt so helpless or vulnerable in my life.

I happened to look out the window and noticed that some of my neighbors were running down the street, their hands over their ears, screaming for help. I wanted to help them, I really did. Yet I was gripped by horror and disbelief. I was practically catatonic. For their sake — and for mine — all I could hope for was a swift end to the halftime show.

Shrieking like a hyena giving birth, she closed her “song” with something that approximates the phrase, “you make we wanna SCREAM!” And then she waited for applause.

Instead, she got boos, the kind of irate and vindictive boos that usually occur after a pro wrestler taunts a crowd. Through the cacophony, the gentle strains of “You suck!” could be heard. Ashlee was escorted off the stage and through a tunnel, and let’s just say the Indiana Pacers were received more warmly by Detroit fans when they walked toward the locker room after the brawl.

Just go away now

I consider myself a tolerant person. I accept the talented and talentless equally. I realize not everyone can sing like Sinatra or Streisand. Usually, I applaud the effort, even if the result is unsatisfactory. On the handful of occasions when I have been at a karaoke bar, I clap my hands supportively for each and every participant, regardless of how pitiful their attempts. That’s just the kind of guy I am.

But I believe there are limits, and Ashlee has crossed mine, and I believe, the world’s. She is using her status as the sister of Jessica Simpson in order to carve out a career for herself. How anyone can listen to Jessica, let alone Ashlee, borders on the stupefying. But I see stories on the news all the time about con artists who separate people from their life savings. I know there were scads of gullible viewers who tuned in to watch Geraldo Rivera open Al Capone’s vault. I realize that humans are flawed, and sometimes those flaws can have disastrous consequences.

What I hope and pray for now is that Ashlee will go away and leave the public alone. On behalf of the world community, I implore her to pursue another career. There are many avenues for a young woman of her abilities. Pig farmers need wranglers. The U.S. Forest Service has many outposts in remote areas of our nation’s parks, where one can make all the noise one wants and not be heard by another soul for miles. And if she’s determined to remain in the entertainment field, the horror genre in Hollywood could always use a good screamer.

But Ashlee must cease and desist her professional singing career immediately. The lip-synching angered many. The Orange Bowl debacle undoubtedly caused thousands to seek counseling. What does she want next? Is she setting up some sort of blackmail scheme: “Give me $10 million or I’ll keep singing”?

If that’s the case, I’m prepared to donate generously. I don’t think I’m alone.

well she obviously has something that people want and thats why shes still a singer. i actually find her voice very unique, deep and kinda throaty. you might as well be making another thread bashing william hung. and theres a difference here, the younger crowd might like things differently from the older crowd, i'm pretty sure your music preferences are different from your parents or whoever, over time things change, so do music preferences. and it seems to be its somewhat of a trend for "sk8ters" or "punks" or "goths" to hate any singer thats not hardcore enough or they think is being a poser, (i dont think the way you dress even has anything to do with singing) even though every one of those kids are posers

i dont know, i think people are being too hard on this girl, if you dont like her well then dont bother her and let her fade away in oblivion.

She doesn't need to have something people want. She's leeching off her sister's popularity and her dad has an influence in the music industry.

i actually find her voice very unique, deep and kinda throaty.

440632[/snapback]

If by "unique" you mean "bad", then yes, I agree.

the younger crowd might like things differently from the older crowd, i'm pretty sure your music preferences are different from your parents or whoever, over time things change, so do music preferences.

The younger crowd is easily influenced by the media. All the most heavily marketed "artists" are the most popular among the age 13 and under group. Examples? Good Charlotte, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, etc. The older you get the more you realize the difference between music and overly marketed crap.

and it seems to be its somewhat of a trend for "sk8ters" or "punks" or "goths" to hate any singer thats not hardcore enough or they think is being a poser, (i dont think the way you dress even has anything to do with singing) even though every one of those kids are posers

These trends practically don't exist after high school. People just know what they like, what's talent, and Ashlee Simpson does not have it.

i dont know, i think people are being too hard on this girl, if you dont like her well then dont bother her and let her fade away in oblivion.

Too hard on her? She's a hack. She can't sing, this was too be expected.

Hopefully she will fade after this.

If MTV puts a performer on several specials and keeps pouring out the impression that this singer "Is totally cool and awesome and we should all love her!", then yeah, there will be a following. Her voice is looped and digitally enhanced enough in a studio that her radio songs are tolerable, but her live performances only prove that she is 100% unworthy of the fame she has fallen into,

I agree that she is not talented at all... in my opinion.. but the crowd shouldn't have boo'd her like they did... disrespectful....

they could have shown their disapproval of her performance with just saying nothging and not responding at all!

I agree she sucks... but I think her family has been pushing her to sing... even though she can't.... and I can't help but feel sorry for her.

Come on burny... I have a soft spot today... and that doesn't happen often... or for long when it does... so just go with it! tongue.gif

For all you folks feeling sorry for Ashlee, here's quote I read:

"My daughter was a backup dancer for Ashlee at the Orange Bowl. Ashlee barely acknowledged the dancers. Never spoke to them during rehearsal, motioned for her "whatever" and then whispered any instructions to her, that person would then talk to the dancers! She was standing right next to them! She ran by them as she was going on stage with a "Thanks." Never took pics with the dancers. She thought she was SO much better than them. I guess she got knocked down a bit. She should remember the Golden Rule...Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!"

I think that what happened at the Orange Bowl was good for little Miss Ego.

Karma seriously bit her in the **** eh.

Apparently she just released a 'letter to her fans' in which she blamed the problem on an 'acid reflux' and tells the little kids who support her to not listen to anyone telling bad things about her because they're not true, she's still gonna rock and out, HAS A TOUR planned for the end of the month.

Much better Nxt.

You see, it's not just her disgustingly awful lackof talent, or the fact that her entire career is based on LEECHING off her sisters fame (famous for being a stupid idiot, there's something to be proud off) but it's the fact that she's a foul child who doesn't care about anything except how big she can get.

I'm happy she got boo'ed because maybe i'll make her actually look around, realise she's awful, and take a more useful career. Maybe working down a very deep mine.

It's not just this. She's been around for, what, 6 months? And has had more blunders than most decade-long career artists. As if getting caught lip-syncing on SNL wasn't bad enough.

Ugh. Just go away please. Now.

laugh.gif lol...it just goes to show that just because the magic of technology can make someone's voice passable on a cd, does not mean they can actually sing in real life....

I personally thought her being a singer was pure garbage in the first place and completely unfair that just because her sister has an established music career, (which I might add - I think she over dramatizes her singing...but that's another topic-) it shouldn't be as easy for her to get fame so easily.

This is a reality check for her. If she yet again embarrasses herself publicly...its really her own fault.

Did anyone ever the Simpsons where Bart/Milhouse/Nelson get recruited into a boy band? One flip of a switch and the boys scratchy off tune voices were instantly changed to nice smooth voices?

I think Ashlee has used that device and is obviously, painfully untalented without it...

Lets just hope she gets what she has coming to her.

What do I want to hear next from Ashlee? "Would you like fries with that?..." when I place my order for a burger... rolleyes.gif

^hahahaha thats great^

i wish i could have been there selling rotten fruit, or ear plugs, i would have made a fortune, even at 50 cents a tomato. i have acid reflux, and it doesn't do crap to my voice, it can get bad enough to make me throw up, but even when it got that bad my voice was fine. there are things to do to fix it, what she cant buy some antacids with all that money shes making?

If I would have been there and she had sounded alright I would have still booed her because she probably had some "help" and I just plain don't like her. Her stupid show even proved that she couldn't sing. rolleyes.gif Rock and roll my ass.

Real punks, goths, etc, know the difference between GOOD music and BAD music. Even if that particular artist isnt in our genre of choice (self proclaimed punk here).

Ashlee Simpson is just horrible.

Its not about her voice, or the fact that her music is corperate bullsh*t. Its about the entertainment factor and she cannot entertain on ANY grounds other than entertaining us with how much she SUCKS.

I saw her little television show. It was seriously like a train wreck. You know you shouldnt look, but you just cant help it.

It made me feel like a better person.
