Central to L'Enfant's 1790 plan for a new federal city was the executive residence of the president. And indeed, on October 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the Executive Mansion was laid by the Freemasons and the Commissioners of the District of Columbia. But the ceremony was not without controversy.
