Still Waters Posted August 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 16, 2017 A Canadian province is banning the contentious practice of hunting grizzly bears for sport. British Columbia's new NDP government has announced that this season will be the last for trophy hunters. Hunting grizzlies for meat will still be permitted in all parts of the province except in one rainforest. The Great Bear Rainforest will have no hunting of any kind, at the request of indigenous groups. About 250 grizzlies are killed each year for meat or sport. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40940451
Dark_Grey Posted August 16, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 16, 2017 Quote The Great Bear Rainforest will have no hunting of any kind, at the request of indigenous groups. Quote The government had promised to end the hunt during the last election, citing changing public opinion. A poll found that about 90% of British Columbians oppose the trophy hunt. So...more legislation based on feelings? Quote The ministry estimated that there are about 15,000 grizzlies in the province. [...] About 250 grizzlies are killed each year for meat or sport. Clearly the grizzly population isn't in danger

Of the people polled, how many know what the Grizzly numbers are? How many of the pollsters understand predator population control? Vote with facts and stats, always. The people polled are not experts so they should not be making policy Edit to add-- The cougar/mount lion explosion in California is a perfect parallel. Kids and pets are getting mauled because bleeding hearts don't want hunters to manage them Edited August 16, 2017 by Dark_Grey
Likely Guy Posted August 16, 2017 #5 Share Posted August 16, 2017 If you don't eat it, don't shoot it (unless it's trying to eat you).

Gingitsune Posted August 16, 2017 #7 Share Posted August 16, 2017 If you want a trophy grizzly bear, just go to Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, North West Terriotories or Nunavut. It's not like a trophy hunter is out of option.
+Hammerclaw Posted August 17, 2017 #8 Share Posted August 17, 2017 I have no problem with subsistence hunting, or if necessary for public safely, the culling of a burgeoning population of griz. Killing them for sport, to me, seems wasteful and the unnecessary death of a beautiful, if terrifying, animal.

Exactly. For both quotes. Why kill another living creature for part of it's body? If it us for food I can understand, but to kill it just for a bear skin rug is absolutely appalling IMO.

On the north arm of the lake I live on was a Grizzly nicknamed 'Volkswagen'. He looked liked a fur coated car and at his age he preferred to use 'our roads'. Everyone gave him the right of way. He is, sadly, dead by now. Everyone hopes that it was a natural death. We've imposed far too much.
