Why is reluctance/reticence/regret called 'cold feet'?

The origin of the term itself has been largely attributed to American author Stephen Crane, who added the phrase, in 1896, to the second edition of his short novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets.[7][8] Crane writes, "I knew this was the way it would be. They got cold feet." The term is present in "Seed Time and Harvest" by Fritz Reuter published in 1862.[8][9][10] Kenneth McKenzie, a former professor of Italian at Princeton Universityattributed the first use of the phrase to the play Volpone produced by Ben Jonson in 1605.[8][9] The true origin and first usage of the phrase remains debated and unconfirmed as exemplified above.

Might it be an antonym to 'hot feet', as in the opposite to 'hot footing' it somewhere?

Why do we wear socks in identical pairs?  Even if there are 4 socks of the same size and colour, we will root around for the other one of the pair.

Why do those comical Brits* insist on a 'u' in 'odour' but leave it out of 'deodorant' ?

Yes, but often radio stations, for instance, will say "text in on 88888" or whatever,  so the only way you can do it is by fiddling about with your Eye Phone. It's often less of a faff to do it on your PC or Lap Top.

If the kids don't need no education, why did Pink Floyd go to Cambridge University?

It's all part of life's rich pattern I guess" it's just another brick in the wall"

Why do planes bother to travel from the UK to the US?  Surely, if you go up in a helicopter and hover, America will be along soon.
