Because capitalism is all about buying out the competition and closing it down. However, asda and sainsburys do tend to cater for different sectors of the market (Sainsburys is rather more upmarket), so I don't know if they might keep the Asda branches as a sort of 'lower cost' subsidiary, or whether they would try to Sainsburyize Asda, or whether, and I expect this is probably the most likely outcome, they'll decide it's a dead loss and flog off the whole lot cheap to Poundland within a few years.
