What do Americans fear most?

13 posts in this topic

Chapman University recently completed its fourth annual Chapman University Survey of American Fears (2017). The survey asked respondents about 80 different fears across a broad range of categories including fears about the government, the environment, terrorism, health, natural disasters, and finances, as well as fears of public speaking, spiders, heights, ghosts and many other personal anxieties.

In addition to the set of fears examined in previous waves, the survey team took a closer look at one particular fear-related phenomena: fear of extremism.

On a steady diet of fear, auto-fed by the conveyor belt of television and marketing... they are well fed, whatever brand of fear they're into...

Hmmm.  I don't see "running out of ammo" listed.  Must be a Southern thing  :w00t::gun:

Interesting... I’d have to totally agree with #1.

You have to give it to Americans... yes, as quiXilver mentioned, there’s a lot of fear being purveyed, and quite a few on the list are of the purveyed persuasion... but when it gets down to it, we still know what’s up.

You’ll hear a lot of scoffing, when “defense against tyranny” gets mentioned... but historically, it’s governments that have posed the greatest danger to people.

Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century.”

As Americans gear up to celebrate Halloween at the end of October, a recent survey has revealed the fears that really keep people up at night. The Chapman University Survey of American Fears polled 1,207 U.S. adults on their levels of fear across 80 different categories. Like last year, corruption of government officials came top in 2017, with 74.5 percent of U.S. adults saying it makes them "afraid" or "very afraid".

You mean #1 isn't "The Russians interfering with our blessed democracy(TM)"? Or "Putin wants to invade us!!!"? Actually that seems a pretty reasonable league table of fears; corrupt government (or government in general) seems a very reasonable thing to fear. Perhaps there is hope yet.

Some of those answers look like they are influenced by the MSM.

Yea really. 80 categories and they all revolve around hot political issues? Mostly the kind of issues they say will only get worse with republicans at the helm? I was expecting things like heights and spiders and public speaking.

Don't you think it would be difficult for answers not to be influenced by media?

Of course not, but you can usually tell as to the depth they are influenced.

As such, I am a little amazed that this made it out to the public.

But... only a little. We still have the net.

Whoops!
