Feds are renewing their fight against the Chicago Mafia

Taking down the Chicago Mafia is once again a top priority for the Feds according to Jeffrey Sallet the newly installed head of the FBI in Chicago. In a recent interview, the new Special Agent In Charge said “The Chicago Outfit? We haven’t forgotten about you,” pledging to refocus the fight against organized crime. The last major mafia case in Chicago happened over a decade ago but Sallet says the Chicago Outfit is still a force and cannot be overlooked.

Thanks for the post and the Question Black Red Devil. I know little about the mafia compared to the Feds and serious researchers who spend a lot of time and energy looking into organized crime that by nature is very secretive. I know Anastasia was shot 11 times in the barber shop most likely by Carmine Persico, the current Boss of the Colombo crime family, and Joey Gallo.

John Travolta’s ‘Gotti’ biopic pulled from schedule 10 days before release

Lionsgate’s “Gotti” mob drama is sleeping with the fishes. The production company has pulled the John Travolta biopic about the infamous mobster from its schedule and sold it back to Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films just 10 days before its planned release, according to Tracking Board. The movie was planned to be released Dec. 15, but is unlikely to meet that deadline. “Gotti” also stars Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston as Victoria Gotti and Stacy Keach as Gotti’s mentor.

NJ Transit quietly writes big check to family of reputed mobster

Expenses from a tunnel project that was canceled seven years ago continue to haunt NJ Transit, which this year wrote a $6.13 million check to the family of a reputed mobster for land the agency wanted for the doomed project. The settlement ended a seven year battle with the family of longtime North Jersey garbage magnate and Township of Washington resident Carmine "Papa Smurf" Franco over the value of a triangular piece of land that NJ Transit condemned for the ARC tunnel project canceled by Gov. Chris Christie in October 2010.

Prosecutors ditch effort to prove mobster Vincent Asaro tried having federal prosecutor killed

Brooklyn prosecutors say they're no longer trying to prove an aging gangster was planning a hit on a federal agent — but they still want the judge to throw the book at the wiseguy. Lawyers acknowledged they're having doubts about the reliability of a jailhouse snitch, and that's made them ditch efforts to show Vincent Asaro was plotting to rub out a federal prosecutor. They didn't elaborate Monday on what they've learned about the confidential source, but noted the tipster's information "was corroborated in significant part."

Al's $100,000,000. in 1932 would be worth over a billion today = $1,653,643,835.62 

Depending on what year they calculated Lucky's $105,000,000 in 1929 would be $1,482,477,192.98 but I'm thinking his numbers probably came from sometime in the 40's but using 1945 it would still be something like $1,424,177,528.09.  Quite a bit when you think about the fact they didn't really have the cocaine and heroin trade boosting their weekly paychecks

Thanks for the link Vincennes. I was surprised to see Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes on there but drugs are a money maker. I think Lucas had some kind of arrangement with the Italians can't remember for sure though.

NJ Orders ‘Sopranos’ Strip Club Owners to Surrender Liquor Licenses After 'Flouting' Law for Years

Authorities say the family that owns a New Jersey strip club where fictional mobsters hung out in “The Sopranos” has been defying state law for years and must hand over its liquor licenses. The Satin Dolls in Lodi, which served as the fictional “Bada Bing” club in the popular HBO crime drama, has until Dec. 17 to stop providing entertainment and must sell or transfer its liquor license by Jan. 3, Attorney General Christopher Porrino announced Thursday. State authorities have ordered A.J.’s Gentleman’s Club in Secaucus to do the same.

Junior Gotti has a reel beef with the upcoming movie about his murderous mob boss dad: “Way too much violence.” “When Hollywood sees a mob movie it has to be a bucket of blood, not family,” the godfather’s son told The Post. “If Hollywood gets the movie 70 percent correct, I’ll be thrilled.” Still, the Mafia scion said John Travolta, who stars in “Gotti” as the infamous Gambino crime family boss, “acted the sh-t out of the film.” while John Gotti Jr. hasn’t seen the final cut of the beleaguered biopic, whose Dec. 15 release was indefinitely postponed last week, he was on the set for nine of the 27 days of shooting.

“If Hollywood gets the movie 70 percent correct, I’ll be thrilled.”  I've posted regarding this family before and their egos.  However, this one just about sends me over the top.   He'll be thrilled if they get what 70% right, the part about their illegal activities, the killings that aren't filled with buckets of blood or the part about his own drug dealing history ?  Each time I read something about these jerks, I get more upset with TLC, which used to be "The Learning Channel," promoting them and their lifestyle in their "Growing Up Gotti" reality TV series.

Yes I agree Vincennes, the Gotti's aren't going to win any good neighbor awards. Despite his claims of being "out of that life" my guess is with his Uncle Peter Gotti still being the Official Boss of the family and his Uncle Gene getting out of prison soon we will eventually see this family back in the headlines and they won't be winning the good citizen award.

Seven Long Island mobsters hit with racketeering conspiracy, gambling and obstruction charges 

Several Long Island mobsters were busted Tuesday on a host of criminal charges including loan sharking, drug dealing and running illegal casinos, authorities said. Federal prosecutors unveiled a 13-count indictment charging six members and associates of the Gambino organized crime family, and a member of the Bonanno organized crime family with racketeering conspiracy, illegal gambling and obstruction of justice. The charges against the seven men include alleged criminal activity on Long Island and in Brooklyn that took place between January 2014 and December 2017, officials said.

New mafia turncoat set to testify at trial of Philly mafia boss Joey Merlino

The upcoming racketeering trial of alleged Philadelphia mafia boss Joseph (Skinny Joey) Merlino and Genovese crime family capo Eugene (Rooster) Onofrio got a little more interesting with the feds set to add another mafia rat into the fold. According to a new report from Ganglandnews, the feds plan to have former Bonanno crime family capo Peter (Pug) Lovagliotake the stand and testify against both mobsters. Lovaglio will team up with mob snitch John (J.R.) Rubeo who taped multiple conversations with various gangster associated with the East Coast La Cosa Nostra Enterprise case.

More than a year after the arrests of five men charged with extortion and other crimes, one defendant has taken his case to trial, exposing rarely seen dealings of the reputed local arm of the Genovese crime family. That is expected to be a week-long trial kicked off Tuesday in U.S. District Court with Richard Valentini, 52, of East Longmeadow, as the last man standing. Springfield Mob Trial Day Two: 

On day 2 of testimony in mob extortion trial, jurors hear more recordings victim made on land in Hampden

The 2013 version of the "Springfield Crew" was not fond of pushback from its extortion targets. According to testimony in an ongoing trial in U.S. District Court, tow company operator Craig J. Morel wavered between compliance and resistance under the direction of Massachusetts State Police in the autumn of that year, while also squirming under the thumb of a "new crew" of mobsters. Standing trial for conspiracy and extortion is Richard Valentini, one of four men charged in an alleged shakedown of Morel, owner of CJ's Towing Unlimited. Three co-defendants in the case -- Ralph Santaniello, the onetime leader of the local faction of the New York-based Genovese crime family; Giovanni "Johnny Cal" Calabrese; and Francesco "Frank" Depergola -- have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.

Tow company operator testifying in extortion trial: Mobster said kickbacks were intended for city officials. 

Testifying in an ongoing federal extortion trial, Craig J. Morel told jurors he was first approached for kickbacks by a local mobster when he bought a towing company in 2000. With the company, he inherited an exclusive towing and storage pact with the city of Springfield, the flagship contract for his then-young business, C.J.'s Towing Unlimited. Morel testified that Frank Depergola, a family friend and longtime fixture in the Springfield rackets, quickly approached him and told him he was obligated to pay kickbacks to city officials to retain the contract.

It was actually most likely Stephen Grammauta, Arnold Wittenberg and future Consiglieri Joseph Armone's brother Stephen (who was the imprisoned Joseph's replacement i believe); three heroin dealers. It makes no sense that Persico and Gallo did it and there's no evidence for it, i think it came from an informant who was with Persico when he was on the run from his Commission Case indictment, he said Persico said it. It's possible Persico didn't say it or maybe he did and he was lying i dunno but it just doesn't make sense at all. I think the reason people prefer that explanation to the Armone brother one is that it's a future boss and one of the most famous gangsters of the 20th Century, it's more Hollywood but a lot less likely for several reasons. The only thing that gives it a slight bit of credence is Carlo Gambino along with Tommy Lucchese would fund the Gallo's when they started their war against the Colombo leadership a few years later, but then there's a number of things that go against that too. For one the war wouldn't start for another four years and from the evidence available it seems like Gambino and Lucchese got involved after it started meaning there's no evidence of a prior relationship; particularly in 1957 when Persico and Gallo were 24 and 25 respectively. There's also the fact that there's no evidence that Gambino had a hand in Anastasia's murder, again it seems like something every one wants to believe since Gambino has been built up as such a legendary figure similiar to Luciano. The evidence seems to point towards Armand Rava and Johnny Robilotto being the main forces behind Anastasia's murder both of whom would be murdered in the next two years. Gambino didn't even become Boss right away going by the FBI Files that are available, he had the most clout in the family due to his support from a lot of powerful members including Joe Biondo (an Anastasia loyalist going back two decades which again points away from Gambino since he supported him following Alberts death, it would make more sense if he went with Rava and Robilotto) so he took over as de facto boss but it wasn't until around 1960 when he was officially recognized as boss. These are just a few reasons it's highly unlikely it was Persico and Gallo not to mention obvious stuff like they weren't part of the Gambino Family and there's no known connection with them and the Gambino's until four years later and that just seems like Carlo and Tommy taking the opportunity to displace Profaci/Magliocco when a rebellion started.

During a ceremony in a Queens, New York, basement, Gioia took the blood oath of omertà, or silence, about criminal activity. The Lucchese Family is one of the notorious “five families” of the Italian-American Mafia, each with its own territory, set up to control criminal activities in New York City. FIVE YEARS SINCE ILL-CONCEIVED GINO DIPIETRO MOB HIT IN PHILLY, ONE PERPETRATOR LOCKED UP, ANOTHER STILL AT LARGE

Philadelphia mafia associate, convicted felon and former government informant Gino DiPietro was killed gangland style five years ago this week. On the late afternoon of December 12, 2012, just blocks away from where Bruno-Scarfo crime family leaders stood trial for racketeering, DiPietro was slain as he got into his pickup truck across the street from his South Philly residence. Most of the mob administrators on trial eventually walked away from the case unscathed. DiPietro obviously wasn’t so lucky. The Di Pietro murder was the most recent mob hit from the City of Brotherly Love and without question one of the most poorly executed gangland slayings in recent memory.

Richard Valentini guilty of extortion, conspiracy in 'Springfield Crew' organized crime case

Jurors in a federal organized crime trial Monday found East Longmeadow resident Richard Valentini guilty of conspiracy and extortion in connection with an attempted shake down of a city tow company operator. Valentini was one of four alleged members of the "Springfield Crew" -- a local organized crime faction affiliated with the New York-based Genovese crime family -- arrested on Aug. 4, 2016. The men were accused of trying to squeeze $20,000 out of Craig J. Morel, owner of CJ's Towing Unlimited.

Mobster Frank ‘Bobo’ Marrapese dies in R.I. prison

Feared mobster Frank “Bobo” Marrapese, a convicted killer and former member of the Patriarca crime family in Providence, died Friday morning while serving time in Rhode Island for his role in an illegal gambling ring. State Police Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Philbin confirmed the passing of the 74-year-old gangster in a brief phone interview. Marrapese died at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Susan Perez, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.
