'The things you can't beat are the tapes': Jersey Shore Mafia drug ring busted

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has broken up a drug pipeline that ran nearly the entire length of the Garden State Parkway, the culmination of an almost two-year investigation. The suspects have ties to La Cosa Nostra - the Mafia - in Philadelphia, Boston and South Jersey, according to court documents. In complaints unsealed March 14, federal agents charged 79-year-old Carl Chianese of Point Pleasant, 49-year-old Michael Gallicchio of Garfield and 58-year-old Joseph Servidio of Upper Towsnhip with possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, *spam filter* and marijuana, according to the complaints.

Film News Roundup: John Travolta’s ‘Gotti’ Mob Biopic Sets June Release

Kevin Connolly, director of John Travolta’s “Gotti,” has announced that the delayed mob biopic will be out on June 15. Connolly made the announcement Monday on his Instagram account. He did not say which distributor would be handling the release. Producers of “Gotti” decided in December to buy the movie back from Lionsgate, which had planned a release through its Lionsgate Premiere specialty division in hopes of getting “Gotti” a wide theatrical release.

Alleged Genovese soldier charged in bid-rigging scheme, authorities say

An alleged Staten Island mobster and another man are accused of colluding to fix construction bids for a luxury apartment building in Brooklyn, authorities said. Christopher Chierchio, 49, a reputed soldier in the Genovese organized crime family, and Anthony Milohnic, 43, of Long Island, have been charged with felony agreement, arrangement, or combination in restraint of trade or competition, the attorney general announced Thursday. Chierchio also is charged with criminal tax fraud for allegedly evading $94,094 in personal income tax, officials said.

Largest Investigated Loan Shark Operation in New York Leads to Multiple Arrests

Ten people were arrested for allegedly running loan sharking and gambling operations connected to the Lucchese organized crime family. The loan sharking operation is the largest operation ever investigated by the New York Attorney General, with interest payouts exceeding a million dollars just during the approximately one-year investigation, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Known as “Operation The Vig Is Up," the long-term investigation involved the alleged loan sharking and bookmaking activities of Lucchese “made member” Dominick Capelli, 61, of New Rochelle, New York, and alleged Lucchese “associates” or “non-made” crew members in Westchester and the Bronx, New York State’s Eric Schneiderman announced in a statement.

Mobster behind major 2000s fraud scheme now scams immigrant businesses with fire inspector act

Looks like Big Mike is settling for a smaller piece of the action. A Brooklyn mobster who once ran a million-dollar wire fraud scheme is now scamming immigrant-run businesses in Long Island out of $20 by posing as a fire extinguisher inspector, law enforcement sources said. Michael (Big Mike) Castellano, 51, ran his alleged low-rent swindle on at least 30 businesses across Suffolk County, ultimately scoring a little more than $1,000 total, prosecutors said.

Boston nightclub owner killed in a 1993 Mafia hit wrote a terrified note to his son before his death that will be shown to a jury when former mob boss charged with killing him goes on trial

A nightclub owner who was allegedly killed in a Mafia slaying 25 years ago had left a 'distraught' note for his son saying it would be a while before they would see each other after he was called away to meet with a Boston mob boss. Steven DiSarro, who ran the popular Boston nightclub The Channel, was allegedly strangled to death on May 10, 1993 at a home in Sharon, Massachusetts when he was 43. His remains were found buried behind a mill in Providence, Rhode Island in 2016. Former New England Mafia boss Francis 'Cadillac Frank' Salemme, now 84, and Paul Weadick, 62, are both charged in DiSarro's murder.

Mob threatened doctor to write scripts for 230K Oxycodone pills: feds

A Brooklyn doctor was strong-armed by a couple of wiseguys into writing prescriptions for more than 230,000 Oxycodone pills that were then trafficked by members of the Lucchese crime family, according to the Brooklyn US Attorney’s office. Anthony Grado, 54, a solider for the family, was recorded telling the hapless doctor that he would feed him “to the [expletive] lions” if he wrote prescriptions without the mob’s permission, US Attorney Richard Donoghue’s office said Thursday.

Federal prosecutors in Boston say mobster-turned-government witness Robert "Bobby" DeLuca will testify that former mob boss Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio played a key role in a 1992 gangland slaying. According to court documents filed in a separate upcoming mob murder trial, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston said DeLuca is expected to testify that former mob boss Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme ordered the murder of enforcer Kevin Hanrahan in 1992 because "Hanrahan was suspected of a plot to kill Salemme."

'Mom' Boucher used code, hand gestures to plan jailhouse killing

Boucher, 64, pleaded guilty to conspiring to kill Raynald Desjardins, a well known leader in the Montreal Mafia who played a leading role in a conspiracy to kill Mafioso Salvatore Montagna back in 2011. A co-defendant facing murder charges with former mob boss Frank Salemme for the 1993 strangulation of a would-be snitch wants to muzzle prosecutors as they present the case against him, according to court filings. Paul M. Son of mob boss 'Chin' Gigante free on costly $9.8M bond backed largely by mom's Upper East Side townhouse

A taste of freedom was hardly free for the son of late mob boss Vincent (Chin) Gigante. The former Genovese family leader's namesake love child was released last week on a $9.8 million bond backed by $1 million cash and his mom's Upper East Side townhouse, the Daily News has learned. Vincent Esposito, 50, was jailed immediately after his January arrest on charges linked to a long-running Mafia shakedown of local unions. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mobster Vinny Asaro whines judge slapped him with stiff sentence because he beat another case

An aging gangster says he's getting shafted with a stiff sentence for a car arson — all because he managed to beat a bigger case years earlier. Bonanno capo Vincent Asaro, 83, says eight years in prison is over the top for a conviction on ordering the 2012 torching of a car that cut him off. Asaro said the reason the prison term is so out of whack is that Judge Allyne Ross wrongly weighed his 2015 acquittal in a trial where the feds tried linking him to a 1969 murder and the infamous 1978 Lufthansa heist.

Reputed wiseguy Joey “Skinny Joey” Merlino got the OK to remove his ankle bracelet Friday after he pleaded guilty to a single count of illegal gambling that will allow him to avoid retrial — and everybody was happy but the judge. Merlino, the reputed head of the Philadelphia mob, had his initial case dismissed in January after a Manhattan federal jury was unable to reach a verdicton allegations that he engaged in illegal gambling, loansharking, health care fraud and racketeering.

Alleged plot to kill New England mob boss included explosives-laden plane

New court filings are revealing a plot to execute a former New England mafia boss using a remote control plane rigged with explosives during the 1990s. WPRI-TV reports that documents filed ahead of the May 9 murder trial of Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme include a 2016 FBI report detailing the alleged scheme. The report says mob enforcer Kevin Hanrahan planned to fly an explosives-laden plane into Salemme's home in Sharon, Massachusetts. He also wanted to detonate a suitcase with explosives at a restaurant in Providence frequented by Rhode Island mobster Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio.

Hull fire probed as mob boss heads to trial

State fire officials are investigating an out-of-control car blaze earlier this month outside a Hull restaurant owned by the brother of a man set to testify in the ongoing trial of Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme, an admitted killer who was once the head of the New England Mafia. Officials are still trying to determine the cause of the April 17 fire outside the Pizza Box restaurant and have not said whether it could have been aimed at the owner, Peter Booras, who was once pushed out of his ownership of The Channel – in the 1980s, a renowned Boston music club – by Salemme and his associates. Booras’ brother, Harry Booras, is scheduled to testify in Salemme’s federal murder trial, which started with jury selection on Wednesday.

The man named the “the top guy in Toronto” for one of the world’s most powerful crime groups is asking a Canadian court to stop Ottawa’s plan to deport him. Vincenzo (Jimmy) DeMaria, 63, has lived in Canada since he was an infant but never became a Canadian citizen; after a recent declaration he is a senior member of the Mafia and involved in transnational crime, he was ordered back to Italy. The Immigration and Refugee Board issued a deportation order against him late last month after lengthy hearings. The IRB accepted police evidence that DeMaria was a senior boss in Canada of the ’Ndrangheta — the proper name of the Mafia formed in Italy’s region of Calabra — who engaged in money laundering or other proceeds of crime violations.

Witness: Killed Canada Mafia Boss was at Odds with Son-in-Law

The granddaughter of Italian mafia boss Rocco Zito told a Toronto court on Monday that one week before he was killed, Zito, 87, was no longer on speaking terms with his son-in-law, who has been accused of the murder, the Star reported. Zito was shot three times around five in the evening on January 29, 2016 in the front hallway of his brick bungalow. A fourth bullet was found near his body. His son-in-law was living in a basement apartment of the family home.

City gave $37M in contracts to road-repair business whose owner was once tied to Mafia

A contractor whose former company was suspected of mob ties won $37 million in taxpayer-funded city contracts last year — despite his history of blocking investigations into his prior company. Richard Persico owns PCI Industries, a Mount Vernon firm that won three huge city contracts in 2017 to resurface New York City streets and install wheelchair-accessible sidewalk ramps in all five boroughs. He got the lucrative deals even though city investigators say in 2006 he blocked their efforts to look into mob involvement in an affiliated firm he co-owned 50/50 with his brother, Robert.

MOB INFORMANT: INCARCERATED N.E. MAFIA CHIEF PATRIARCA, JR. PAID TO HAVE SALEMME & MANOCCHIO EXECUTED

An informant told the FBI that deposed New England mob don Raymond Patriarca, Jr. backed and financed Kevin Hanrahan’s unsuccessful plot to assassinate a pair of Patriarca Jr.’s successors from behind bars two and a half decades ago, according to a court filing last week related to an upcoming federal murder trial involving one of the intended victims. In a 2016 phone conversation with his FBI handler the informant stated that Patriarca, Jr. sent $100,000 in cash to Hanrahan through an intermediary with instructions to kill then-New England mafia boss Francis (Cadillac Frank) Salemme and his then-underboss Luigi (Baby Shacks) Manocchio, who would go on to replace Cadillac Frank atop the mafia in the Northeast in the years to come.

NY Mafia boss on Springfield gangsters: 'I don't like dealing with them. They're like girls.'

Federal prosecutors are seeking five-year sentences for the last of five local mobsters teed up for sentencing in an extortion and conspiracy case. Francesco "Frank" Depergola, 60, of Springfield, and Richard Valentini, 52, of East Longmeadow, will be the last of five organized crime members to be sentenced for mob-related offenses charged in a 2016 indictment. Two sentencing hearings are scheduled for May 11 in U.S. District Court in Worcester. Prosecutors did not bring RICO charges -- typically the goal for federal mob cases -- but they got far enough. They ensnared Depergola and Valentini, plus alleged Springfield Crew leader Ralph Santaniello and underlings Giovanni "Johnny Cal" Calabrese and Gerald Daniele.

Mobsters will lose ‘core business’ thanks to legal sports betting: experts

The mob’s gambling racket is about to sleep with the fishes. The US Supreme Court’s sports-betting ruling dealt a losing hand to organized crime in the New York area, legal experts said Monday. Gambling and loan-sharking have traditionally been the mob’s “bread and butter,” and the decision will “significantly reduce” its clientele, former federal prosecutor Thomas Seigel said. “They will definitely lose a regular source of predictable income,” said Seigel, who ran the Organized Crime and Gangs Section of the Brooklyn US Attorney’ s Office.
