BrooklynGuy Posted June 11, 2018 Author #151 Share Posted June 11, 2018 Mobster testifies in $10M suit over prison ping-pong injury A ping-pong paddle and a shower shoe were among the key evidence at the slip-and-fall trial for a portly ex-Colombo mob boss who is suing the feds for $10 million, claiming he fell and broke his kneecap during a 2013 ping-pong game in prison. Thomas “Tommy Shots” Gioeli, who was found guilty of racketeering a year earlier and sentenced to 18 years for plotting murders with a henchman, sued the Metropolitan Detention Center for his spill. Gioeli says he went to retrieve a stray ping-pong ball and slipped on a puddle that frequently gathered outside of the unit’s showers due to a leaky slop sink. BrooklynGuy Posted June 12, 2018 Author #153 Share Posted June 12, 2018 (edited) Flemmi says he witnessed killing of Boston nightclub owner and admitted in court he participated in as many as 50 slayings An 83-year-old former gangster who’s testifying against a one-time New England Mafia boss said Thursday that he happened to walked in on the killing of a nightclub owner more than two decades ago. Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi told jurors he walked into the home of then-Mafia boss Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme on May 10, 1993, and saw Salemme’s son strangling Steven DiSarro. Flemmi says another man, Paul Weadick, was holding DiSarro’s legs and Salemme was standing nearby watching. Despite the severity of his offences, Giuseppe (Joey) Violi, 48, received glowing character references from the head of the local paramedic union, a hospital manager and even a priest. Moments before he pleaded guilty on Friday in a Milton, Ont., courtroom to conspiring to import cocaine, trafficking cocaine and trafficking three kilograms of the deadly opioid fentanyl, the handcuffed father of four leaned from the prisoner’s box to give his youngest daughter – born just days ago, while he was in custody – a kiss on the head. I was in Cannes, France, for the world premiere of “Gotti” in May. You have the subtitles across the screen, and it’s your book based on your life, and people are gauging your reaction. It’s not like you’re in your living room with a martini and a cigar. There are sensitive parts, such as when my brother gets hit by a car. I didn’t want to shed a tear. I had to fight it. My big gripe? This project started out with the promise of being a three-hour, $70-million movie. BrooklynGuy Posted June 13, 2018 Author #156 Share Posted June 13, 2018 The last meal: What happened when a crime boss sat down to lunch in a Brooklyn restaurant A hot day in New York City feels like no place else. The heaviness of the air weighs on you as you trudge down the blinding bright streets crisscrossing Gotham. It could be the concrete everywhere–sidewalks below, buildings above–and the smell of garbage that seems to grow in strength whenever the thermometer climbs above 85 degrees. What doesn’t help is that construction picks up in the summer, and the screech of jackhammers and drills penetrates deep into your brain. The 1966 song “Summer in the City” by Lovin’ Spoonful captures it perfectly: “Hot town, summer in the city/Back of my neck turning dirty and gritty/Been down, isn’t it a pity/Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city.” Read more: https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/06/09/carmine-galante/

BrooklynGuy Posted June 16, 2018 Author #159 Share Posted June 16, 2018 Slain mobster Rocco Zito’s former son-in-law found guilty of manslaughter Domenic (Mimmo) Antonio Scopelliti was found guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of mobster Rocco Zito, his former father-in-law. Scopelliti, 54, was found not guilty on Thursday of the more serious offences of first- and second-degree murder for the Jan. 29, 2016 shooting in Zito’s North York bungalow at 160 Playfair Ave. in North York. Scopelliti looked forward and stood straight as he heard the verdict in the University Ave. courthouse. The jury had deliberated since Tuesday afternoon. Sentencing is scheduled for June 20. Scopelliti argued that he shot Zito, 87, to death in self-defence after the longtime mobster threatened him and pulled a gun on him in an argument in the bungalow where they both lived, with seven other family members. BrooklynGuy Posted June 17, 2018 Author #160 Share Posted June 17, 2018 New trial ordered for convicted killer in Gus Boulis mob murder An appeals court gave new life to one of Broward’s most notorious murder cases on Wednesday, ordering a new trial for a man serving a life sentence for ordering the mob-style execution of the founder of Miami Subs in 2001. Anthony “Big Tony” Moscatiello, 79. was convicted in 2015 — the third of three defendants to face justice for the February 2001 murder of Gus Boulis. Moscatiello had been hired as a security consultant to protect one of the new owners of the SunCruz Casino boat fleet, which Boulis had been forced to sell in late 2000. But secretly, the hire was intended to telegraph to the underworld that Moscatiello’s new boss, Adam Kidan, was protected by the Gambino crime family, according to trial testimony. BrooklynGuy Posted June 19, 2018 Author #166 Share Posted June 19, 2018 Closing Arguments Underway in Trial of Former Mob Boss Francis 'Cadillac Frank' Salemme Francis "Cadillac Frank" Salemme was at the pinnacle of his criminal career when he rose to the head of the New England family of La Cosa Nostra in the early 1990s. But a nightclub owner who Salemme believed was ratting him out to authorities was threatening that, a federal prosecutor told jurors Monday. So Salemme had the man killed to keep him quiet, the prosecutor said. "He had aspired to be a gangster his entire adult life," Assistant U.S. Attorney William Ferland said of now-84-year-old Salemme. "All of the effort and time he put into making his name, so to speak, in the world of organized crime was being put at risk by Steven DiSarro." BrooklynGuy Posted June 20, 2018 Author #167 Share Posted June 20, 2018 New York crime families survive and collaborate The ‘Five Families’ of La Cosa Nostra (LCN) remain the most potent organised crime threat in New York, and have diversified their operations despite an apparent decline in their power and influence. In common with its growing global reach, the 'Ndrangheta Calabrian mafia is increasing its activity and influence in the region, particularly in Canada but increasingly in New York as well. These transnational networks are seeking to establish New York as a major drug trafficking hub. That’s the fashionable nickname bestowed on John Gotti, a New Jersey-born mafioso who rose through the ranks to become the head of one of the country’s largest crime families. Gotti’s larger-than-life personality was catnip for the New York-based tabloid press, and he became famed for his brash manner, his ability to dodge criminal charges (a skill that gave him his other headline-friendly name, the Teflon Don), and his sharp dress sense. BrooklynGuy Posted June 21, 2018 Author #168 Share Posted June 21, 2018 NJ sports betting: Will NJ gamblers dump their bookies? For me, the moment came at exactly 11:02 a.m. — and 48 seconds — on Thursday. And I know this because that's the time stamped on the ticket after I waited in line and plunked down $20 on Belgium to win the World Cup. Beyond office pools and such, it marked the first wager I've ever placed on a team sporting event, legal or otherwise. I decided it was a smart bet move because a friend, who knows way more about soccer than I do, said that's what he was doing. If nothing else, the small square of white paper is a little piece of history, as sports betting came to New Jersey in what was a chaotic scene at the Monmouth Park Sports Book by William Hill. In New York, it's as if the last 30 years haven't happened. The mayor is feuding with the press. Rudy Giuliani is talking tough. Donald Trump is making stuff up.
