A Canadian murder. 'Buffalo's crime family.' Is the Mafia still around?

Across the border, journalists covering mob killings in Hamilton, Ont., and the shooting last week of a reputed Mafia leader in Mississauga don't think twice about mentioning the mob in Buffalo. Scattered throughout their stories are references to "Buffalo's crime family" and the role it might have played in the rash of Mafia violence sweeping southern Ontario. The reports have left some in Buffalo wondering: What crime family? Just two years ago, the FBI all but proclaimed the Mafia in Buffalo dead, indicating it no longer had an active presence in the region.

Wh!tey Bulger’s former warden thinks gangster ‘wanted to die’

Wh!tey Bulger was ready to die. That’s according to the former warden of the Florida prison where the 89-year-old crime boss was housed before being shipped off to a West Virginia lockup — where the Boston gangster was found bludgeoned to death less than 12 hours later, NBC News reported Monday. “Quite frankly, I think he wanted to die,” said Charles Lockett, the former warden of Coleman II, a high-security penitentiary in Sumterville. “I think whatever issues he had, he had come to peace with them.”

Organized crime has a long history at the Jersey Shore

The arrest Saturday in New Jersey of a 24-year-old man who was charged with murder in the slaying of reputed Gambino family boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali, is just the latest link between the Jersey Shore and organized crime. Mobsters have had a long love affair with the Shore, dating back to Prohibition days. Middletown's Deep Cut Park was once the estate of mob boss Vito Genovese, who bought it in 1935; it burned down in 1937. Genovese later relocated to Atlantic Highlands, where he lived from 1949 to 1959, when he went to prison.

Shooting of Mob Boss Pat Musitano the latest in a deadly string of mob-related violence

A sunny spring morning and a Mississauga law office parking lot became the setting of the most high profile, mob-related hit Hamilton and the GTA have seen in years. Pat Musitano, reputed scion of the Hamilton crime family that shares his name, was shot Thursday after reportedly leaving a meeting with his lawyer. He was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre and police said Friday that he remains in life-threatening condition. The attack is a direct blow to the once-mighty Musitano family and follows years of underworld turmoil that experts and investigators say has recently boiled over in Hamilton and other areas of the GTA, leading to a spate of killings.

Nick Bosa is the great-grandson of a legendary Chicago mobster

Nick Bosa’s great-grandfather was a different type of hit man. The former Ohio State defensive end comes from a family of NFL players. His brother Joey is a defensive end and former first-round pick for the Los Angeles Chargers. And Bosa’s father and uncle were both first-round draft picks who played three years each in the NFL. But Bosa’s great-grandfather, Tony Accardo, made a name for himself in a more violent way — as a notorious Chicago mafioso.

Montreal mobster Salvatore Scoppa assassinated

Salvatore Scoppa an influential member of the Montreal mafia was shot to death at the Sheraton Laval Hotel according to reports. It’s uncertain as to how many times he was shot or where but multiple sources reported that he was killed. The police confirmed that shots were fired in the area but could not confirm any other reports at this time. Scoppa had been targeted before by rival mobsters but somehow survived although it seems his luck has finally run out. Salvatore and his brother Andrew Scoppa controlled a powerful Calabrian mob clan and had emerged as key players in the Mafia in Montreal during the bloody Montreal mafia war which dismantled the once powerful Rizzuto crime family.

Feds’ case against reputed mobster Philip Narducci hinges on S. Philly barber with alleged ties to Mideast terror group

Is any job title more likely to provoke knee-jerk mistrust from a jury than “former Mafia hit man”? Lawyers for Philip Narducci — reputed former gangland executioner, more recent restaurateur, and current defendant in a federal loan-sharking prosecution — think they’ve found one: “Middle Eastern terrorist.” In an unusual twist in an otherwise old-school mob case, Narducci’s lawyers hope to affix that label to their client’s chief accuser — a man whom they revealed last month to be a South Philadelphia barber, longtime FBI informant, and Lebanese national once found by a judge to have lied about his association with a group tied to the Iran-backed, anti-Israel terror group Hezbollah.

While La Cosa Nostra no longer reigns supreme over organized crime, the mob is far from vanquished.

It would have been easy until a few weeks ago to assume Italian-American mobsters were extinct, and that's exactly how Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali liked it. Investigators say Cali ran the Gambino crime family like a "ghost," conducting business strictly in person to avoid wiretaps, and insisting that his underlings do the same. Yet Cali, 53, was splashed on covers of New York City tabloids in March after being shot six times outside his Staten Island home. It was the first murder of a mob boss since 1985, when Gambino head Paul Castellano was gunned down outside Sparks Steak House in midtown Manhattan by three trench coat–wearing men under orders from John Gotti, who watched the cinematic rubout from a car across the street.

Bulger mystery: Why has this inmate spent 6 months in solitary?

In the hours after infamous Boston mob boss James "Wh!tey" Bulger was found murdered inside a West Virginia prison, a group of inmates were whisked to solitary confinement. Six months later, at least one of them is still there: a Vermont man who pleaded guilty to stealing guns from a local firearms store to trade for drugs. Sean McKinnon, 33, has been confined to a cell for roughly 23 hours a day since last October — a fate that has his mother worried sick over the toll on his mental health.

Police sting revealed plans for gangland hits on Musitano family

Just months after Angelo Musitano was gunned down in his driveway, a fellow convicted mobster was caught on tape musing that Musitano's brother, Pat, would be next. He was right. Pat Musitano was shot several times in front of his lawyer's office in Mississauga late last week. Peel Regional Police confirmed Monday morning that the 51-year-old is still alive in a Toronto-area hospital and in critical condition. Information about the fate of the Musitano brothers is included in court transcriptions of conversations recorded by a paid police agent as part of the case against Domenico and Giuseppe (Joey) Violi.

Son of mob boss Vincent Gigante enters surprise guilty plea in union shakedown case, forced to surrender $3.8M, facing 30 months in prison

The love child of late mob boss Vincent “Chin” Gigante, in a surprise plea deal, confessed to following dad into the family business. Vincent Esposito, 51, after pleading guilty Wednesday to racketeering conspiracy, faces up to 30 months in prison and a $3.8 million cash forfeiture for his role in a long-running Mafia shakedown of local unions. The offspring of the infamous Genovese family leader showed no emotion at the Manhattan Federal Court hearing where he became the second son of the bathrobe-wearing boss to face jail time.

St. Pete hotels swear Babe Ruth and Al Capone were once guests. We settle the legends.

George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. came back to the Tampa Bay area year after year for spring training. While with the Boston Red Sox, he hit what was then his longest home run in Tampa in 1919. According to Hidden History of St. Petersburg by Will Michaels, the home run was the reason why St Pete mayor Al Lang pushed for the Yankees to train in St Pete. Lang wasn’t the only one happy to have Ruth around. “The city was seized by 'Ruthamania," wrote Michaels in The Making of St. Petersburg. "Babe Ruth look-alike contests were held.

From what I understand it has been loosely connected to the new "Buffalo Billions" work projects and the awarding of contracts for those items. Even after all these years its still all about construction.

It's the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" meets "The Sopranos."

A career criminal with past ties to the mob has been charged with beating up a former RHONJ cast member and her fiance after breaking into their home in 2017. James "Jimmy Balls" Mainello, 51, was arrested at his home in Bayonne on Friday nearly two years after the bizarre attack in which "an Italian guy with a North Jersey accent" told the pair: "This is what happens when you **** with people from Paterson." Monmouth County prosecutors said Mainello and another man were lying in wait inside the Banyan Boulevard home of David Cantin on May 13, 2017, when Cantin and Dina Manzo were bum-rushed by the two assailants as they walked through their front door.

The lawyer for the Eltingville man accused of slaying mob boss Francesco (Franky Boy) Cali outside the victim’s Hilltop Terrace home last month, said Wednesday that information on his client’s computer and cell phones could prove crucial to the case. “We want the guts of the electronic devices so we can begin our own analysis,” attorney Robert Gottlieb said during Anthony Comello’s arraignment in state Supreme Court, St. George, on murder and weapon-possession charges. “All of that information is essential to move this case forward.”

Tony Musitano, once a notorious Mafia boss with a string of convictions and a wicked sense of humour, dead at 72

Anthony Musitano, known to everyone as Tony, was walking through the dry cleaner he ran in Hamilton, Ont., lighting a cigarette as he passed stacked barrels of chemicals. “Should you be smoking here? Is that stuff flammable?” I asked. Musitano turned with a serious look and said: “I can make it burn, if you want.” The joke was that Musitano was once so notorious for a string of arson and bombings in a Mafia extortion plot that Hamilton city council passed a unanimous motion banning him from the city when he was released from prison.

Staten Island mob killer worried about being ‘marked’ after slaying boss

Anthony Comello knew he was a marked man as soon as he pulled the trigger. Within moments after gunning down Gambino crime boss Frank “Franky Boy" Cali outside his Staten Island home, the unhinged 24-year-old murder suspect frantically fired off a text, reading “I’m on the run.” “My family is marked,” he wrote, according to Staten Island prosecutors at a bail hearing for Comello Thursday. Comello has been indicted for the execution-style killing of Cali in front of his victim’s home on March 13. Police sources said that Comello was outraged that Cali demanded that his niece stop seeing the Staten Island resident.

‘Wh!tey’ Bulger Wrote Letters Praising Trump to a Juror Who Convicted Him

Just months before he was bludgeoned to death in a West Virginia prison, notorious Boston mobster James “******” Bulger poured his heart out in a series of letters praising President Trump (he had his vote) and criticizing Robert Mueller, whom he said should be nicer. The 75 missives were sent to the most unusual of pen pals—a juror who helped to convict him of the 11 murders he carried out during the 1970s and 80s. Janet Uhlar, a nurse from Cape Cod, shared the letters and photos Bulger sent her with NBC News last week.

Mafia Ties: Youngstown’s Mob history highlighted in upcoming show

Two men with Youngstown roots are putting together a show about the Mob in the city. The plan is that by late summer, it’ll be available on Amazon Prime. Downtown Youngstown is where 75 percent of the series titled “Mafia Ties” was taped. “I decided to start writing a story about when I was growing up and the things that I seen,” said John Wilson, the show’s creator from Youngstown. He started writing it three years ago. When he met Poland native James Weetman and learned he was interested in filmmaking, they teamed up for the series.

Here’s how a wiretap recorded a conversation talking about getting rid of Pat Musitano

Someone wants Pasquale (Pat) Musitano dead — that much is clear. But why was the 51-year-old Hamilton mob boss, who remains in hospital with "life-threatening" injuries, shot outside his Mississauga lawyer's office early Thursday morning? The targeted shooting comes amid a string of Mafia hits, so perhaps the biggest question is: why now? Wire tap conversations recorded as part of the prosecution against Domenico (Dom) and Giuseppe (Joe) Violi revealing the plan to target the Musitano boss stretch back at least to the fall of 2017, months after the May 2 shooting death of Pat's younger brother, Angelo (Ang) Musitano, in Waterdown.

Donald Trump's Mafia Connections: Decades Later, Is He Still Linked to the Mob?

On a rainy day in the spring of 1976, FBI Special Agent Myron Fuller took the New York subway to Brooklyn to interview Donald Trump. The future tycoon, about 30, was just getting his real estate career off the ground, aided by secret payments from his father. Fuller found Trump working out of a temporary office in a double-wide trailer on a muddy construction site. "There were boards covering wet dirt, in lieu of cement walkways," Fuller recalls to Newsweek. He knocked on the door and went in. "His secretary sat there by the entrance, and Trump was a door away from there." Ushered in, he found Trump sitting behind his desk.
