Explorer goes missing in New Guinea

The family of a British explorer who has vanished on a quest to reach a lost tribe of headhunters say they fear he may have been attacked by drug barons. 

Benedict Allen's wife and sister say he has gone missing before and have not heard from him in three weeks because he has no phone or GPS device.

He was dropped by helicopter into the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea in late October and a search has since been launched for him.

His wife Lenka is frantic with worry because he is supposed to have started his journey home by Sunday but missed his flight.

The 57-year-old father of three, who has explored the Gobi desert and the Amazon in a lifetime of adventuring – once eating his own dog to survive, tweeted before he left that he 'may be some time' and told people not to 'rescue' him.

The BBC's Frank Gardner said Mr Allen had asked to be rescued and efforts were under way to retrieve him, but he was "not out of danger yet".

Well, I'm very glad, but not in the least surprised, that he's turned up. I wonder if there'll be a book out anytime soon?

The guy could have easily been killed by a venomous snake..more people die from snake bites in Papua than cancer and heart disease.

Quite a lot die violent deaths as well. Point is Benedict Allen has form for drama.

my grandfather in law used to be stationed in angola as ussr military adviser,  he said the worst things were not snakes or any animals, it is the insects, they will kill you sooner than anything else.
