The Argentine navy is stepping up its search in the South Atlantic for a 44-crew submarine that has been out of radio contact for three days.

President Maurico Macri said all national and international resources were being deployed to help find the San Juan as quickly as possible.

A Nasa research plane has joined the search for the vessel.

Britain and countries in the region have offered help after it disappeared 430km (267 miles) off the coast.

“Some sources were saying that this was banging on the hull in Morse code signals,” Enrique Balbi, a navy spokesman, said. He said the sources could not be verified.

The submarine reportedly carried enough food, oxygen and fuel for the crew to survive about 90 days on the sea’s surface, but only enough oxygen to last seven days underwater, he said.

The submarine was originally scheduled to arrive Sunday in Mar del Plata, a navy base about 250 miles southeast of Buenos Aires.

Huh, there is actually a really good chance for a happy ending here.  Being a sub, I thought they were goners.

Submarine rescue has happened before. The "heat" stain is a good indicator the submarine is intact, and not flooded with water. These rescue vehicles do their job, and quite well. And 230 feet is not too deep considering what it could have been. I just pray they have found them, and the air holds out, and they are rescued.

The Argentinian submarine that vanished last month was being chased by a British helicopter and Chilean ship shortly before disappearing, one of the doomed vessel's sailors told his sister in a "strange" message that was one of the last sent from the sub.

The sister's account, made public Wednesday, was immediately blasted by Argentinian military officials as "completely untrue." But Jessica Medina, whose brother Roberto Daniel Medina served aboard the sub, told Argentina's La Gaceta newspaper in an exclusive interview that she received the message on WhatsApp just days before the vessel vanished Nov. 15.

"It was that weird message in which he told us he was looking for a British helicopter and a Chilean ship, but unfortunately we did not continue with that conversation, he stayed there. That was the last message," she said. In his messages, the sister said her brother told her the ARA San Juan was sailing close to the Falklands -- referred to as Malvinas by Argentina -- on Nov 3.

Hmm... that IS very strange. The Royal Navy flatly denies any involvement. The UK DOES have a warship on patrol in and around the Falklands... it is a light coastal patrol ship called HMS Clyde. Whilst it DOES have a flight deck capable of landing a Merlin antisubmarine helicopter, it is not actually equiped with one as standard.

So where would this hypothetical helicopter have come from ?

I think the sailor may have been telling a tall tale to impress his sister ? I mean... how would he KNOW that a helicopter was 'chasing' their submarine, let alone know its nationality ?

The Chillean navy DOES have some ships with helicopters.. but.. it's a LONG way from Chille to the area of the Falklands.

In any case, I think its just woo - but I am sure the conspiracy theorists will turn it around!
