What exactly is the Holy Grail?

Type “Holy Grail” into Google and … well, you probably don’t need me to finish that sentence. The sheer multiplicity of what any search engine throws up demonstrates that there is no clear consensus as to what the Grail is or was. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of people out there claiming to know its history, true meaning and even where to find it.

I have read a few odd books about the topic many years ago , but it keeps coming back to a cup or bowl, etc when referring to the original writings  , though later on that was changed by Malory to mean 'san graal' or royal blood which is where all the conspiracy tales come from.

I'm not an expert by any means but the 'cup' explanation always seemed to make sense to me.

from the wiki piece...

"The word graal, as it is earliest spelled, comes from Old French graal or greal, cognate with Old Provençal grazal and Old Catalan gresal, meaning "a cup or bowl of earth, wood, or metal" (or other various types of vessels in different Occitan dialects).[7] The most commonly accepted etymology derives it from Latin gradalis or gradale via an earlier form, cratalis, a derivative of crater or cratus, which was, in turn, borrowed from Greek krater (κρατήρ, a large wine-mixing vessel).[7][8][9][10][11] Alternative suggestions include a derivative of cratis, a name for a type of woven basket that came to refer to a dish,[12] or a derivative of Latin gradus meaning "'by degree', 'by stages', applied to a dish brought to the table in different stages or services during a meal".[13]

Late medieval writers such as Thomas Malory invented a fanciful new etymology for Old French san-graal (or san-gréal), meaning "Holy Grail", by parsing it as san graal, meaning "royal blood".[14] After the cycle of Grail romances was well established, later writers used this alternative etymology. Since then, "Sang real" is sometimes employed to lend a medievalising air in referring to the Holy Grail. This connection with royal blood bore fruit in a modern bestseller linking many historical conspiracy theories ..."

Thou shall count down from three, not four. Thou can count to two, provided thou proceed immediately to one.

My understanding (without direct knowledge) is that the Holy Grail is purported to be a drinking vessel (cup or bowl) of currently debated material or decoration, that Christ used during the "Last Supper", venerated its content of wine to metaphorically represent His blood, and all Apostles present sipped from it.

It is important to note that the consumable wine content itself was "blessed", not the container.

I don't understand the confusion the Grail has always been the cup that Christ was supposed to have used at the last supper, anything else is just new crap...

Where I come from - the wild reaches of northern England - there is a legend that "Holy Grail" is derived from "Holy Grey Owl". The Grey Owl became extinct in those parts after the Romans caught too many as pets. They were revered for their wisdom, so any Centurion worth his salt wanted one. The legend is that the Grey Owls are not in fact extinct, but exist in small numbers near the border with Scotland. Allegedly, spotting a Grey Owl will bring great riches. Killing one will bring a curse. You can see the similarities with the Grail myths that originated at the time the Romans left Britain.

Early in the 20th century a man called Archibald Belaney (1888 - 1938) learned of the Holy Grey Owl legend and, after emigrating to Canada, claimed he was the personification of the Grey Owl, and became somewhat famous for this.

Most Holy Grail myths are complete fabrications. With hand on heart I can tell you - so is this one!

Everyone knows its a spotlight...

Honestly though, in my opinion the Val Codera in Italy has a pretty good pedigree, assuming there really was such a cup. That's a can of worms in itself. There has been a great market for biblical items for a very very long time. So it could be that cup, or it could be a cup someone made to look like it could be that cup.

If you study it closely (well as close as possible from pictures) it looks to me like it could have been a stone cup which was cut in half later and to which was added some fancy gold trim. Of course that last bit is all speculation on my part. Just think its interesting.

What is a Grail according to the version of Abd-ru-shin:

Spoiler

The Castle of the Grail stands at the summit of the eternal Sphere of Spiritual Substantiality, spiritually visible and tangible, because it is still of the same species of spiritual substantiality. This Grail Castle contains a Sanctuary which lies on the outermost border adjacent to the Divine Sphere, and is thus still more ethereal than the rest of spiritual substantiality. In this Sanctuary, as a pledge of the eternal Goodness of God the Father, as a symbol of His Purest Divine Love, and as the direct point of origin from which Divine Power issues: the Holy Grail!

In this chalice, the contents swirl and surge unceasingly, like red blood, without ever overflowing. Enveloped as it is in the most Luminous Light, only the purest of all spirits in the Realm of Spiritual Substantiality are granted permission to look into this Light. From time to time on the Day of the Holy Dove, the Dove appears above the Chalice as a renewed token of the unalterable Divine Love of the Father. It is the hour of communion which brings about the renewal of power. The Guardians of the Grail receive it in humble devotion and are then able to transmit this miraculous power.

The existence of the whole Creation depends on this!

It is the moment in which the Love of the Creator flows forth radiantly in the Temple of the Holy Grail, bringing new life and a new urge to create, which pulsates downwards and is disseminated throughout the entire Universe. A tremor courses throughout all the spheres, a sacred thrill of expectant joy and of great happiness. Only the spirit of earth-man still stands aside, without intuitively sensing what is happening particularly to him at that moment, what an immeasurable gift he receives in such dull-witted manner, because the limitations he imposed upon himself through his intellect no longer permit him to grasp such greatness.

It is the Life-giving moment for the entire Creation!
It is the necessary, ever-recurring confirmation of the Covenant between the Creator and His Work. Should this supply ever be cut off, should it ever fail to occur, all that exists would inevitably slowly dry up, age and disintegrate. It would be the end of all days, and only God Himself would remain, as it was in the beginning! Because He alone is Life. The appearance of the Dove on the special Day of the Holy Dove indicates the sending of the Holy Spirit on each occasion; for this Dove stands in very close connection with Him.

I don't know. But there was a movie about him starring Pierce Brosnan. It was a flop.
