Still Waters Posted November 26, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2017 There’s something going on in one Brooklyn neighborhood that doesn’t pass the smell test. As CBS2’s Scott Rapoport reported, some residents in East Williamsburg say they’re smelling a very distinct yet unusual aroma in the air. Adding to the mystery, nobody can figure out where it’s coming from. “Strong. It hits you as soon as you leave the apartment,” said Michael Cucinotta. He said as crazy as it sounds, his nose knows. After the last three years around Montrose and Graham avenues, as he walks his dog Midas in the morning, he has been baffled by the unexplained smell of onions. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/11/24/brooklyn-onion-smell/

bison Posted November 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 27, 2017 Acrylonitrile reportedly smells strongly of onions. It's a common industrial chemical, toxic, and is used in the manufacture of plastics, acrylic yarn, and as a fumigant. The smell could be from real onions, too. Perhaps from a food processing plant or a large restaurant which recently opened, or one that installed a new, more efficient, ventilation system.
