Tiggs Posted December 15, 2017 #31 Share Posted December 15, 2017 Funniest take I've read today:It may not be technically illegal to bring a bear into a maternity ward, but we have, I think, started to live our lives with the expectation that nobody will do this. So if we put forth a rule saying, just so we’re clear, No Bears in the Maternity Ward, I would not expect anyone to complain that this was stifling innovation. In fact, if someone said “Hey, let’s get rid of that rule about not bringing bears into hospitals so we can restore the wonderful, competitive environment we had before,” I would wonder, “What exactly are you PLANNING that you need us to get rid of this relatively basic protection?” (The good news is that, according to the FCC, the free market frowns on people releasing large numbers of bears into hospitals, so it probably will not happen. Even if people are lobbying hard to get rid of the No Bears in the Maternity Ward rule. So we can rest easy, in our hospitals, with the steak on our pillow — was there always steak? Lord, this is terrifying.) Source: Washington Post

If people want to pay more for better service than we have now, what is wrong with that? Conflating that to say we are all going to get worse service does not make sense. You are saying that all providers will automatically want to screw us all for their jollies. Sorry, but I don't hate everyone around me to assume the worst of them all. Geo-limitations are already all around us, thanks in part to Google's blind obedience to Beijing. Net neutrality didn't do a thing about it. And relax, if anything does go wrong, I am sure an army of hate-Trumpers will sound the alarm. The problem is, they will probably do so even if nothing real happens.... thus defeating the purpose of Watchdog groups. You guys might want to look to that.

You are saying that all providers will automatically want to screw us all for their jollies. Actually, bandwidth throttling is a real thing. It's been a real issue in Canada where 3 telecomm giants own the internet landscape. They drive out competitors and maintain a mutually beneficial competition between themselves. Peep this: Bell Releases Throttling Details to CRTC Quote Bell Canada slows certain types of downloads to as little as 1.5 to 3 per cent of their advertised speed during 9½ hours of the day, but not to the same extent during the entire period, company executives revealed to Canada's internet regulator Tuesday. The details of the way the company throttles — selectively slows down — peer-to-peer (P2P) file transfers will soon be posted on the company's website, Jonathan Daniels, Bell's vice-president of regulatory law, said at a hearing Tuesday before the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission. HuffPo - Internet Throttling in Canada Quote Bell Canada announced in 2011 that it planned to phase out the practice by March of 2012. Rogers followed suit several months later, pledging to stop slowing traffic on its network by the end of 2012. But a report from the Google-backed Measurement Lab last year found Bell was still throttling 77 per cent of file-sharing traffic on its network in the first quarter of 2012, while Rogers throttled 80 per cent. However, this period took place before the ISPs’ promised final deadlines to discontinue throttling. Canada Worst for Internet Throttling Quote An international analysis of how Internet service providers conduct their business has found that Canadian companies like Rogers and Bell rank among the worst in the world for throttling Internet access. “Nearly all of the major Internet providers are heavy throttlers and Rogers tops them all,” the report reads, published by TorrentFreak and looking at Bittorrent users in particular. “For more than half a decade Rogers has continuously throttled more than three-quarters of all BitTorrent traffic.” I know there is a big argument over p2p file sharing and so on but the fact remains; internet providers can and will throttle any type of internet usage they see fit to throttle. How has my wonky, "semi- Socialist but still awesome" country decided to resolve this problem? Net neutrality. Quote The CRTC was forced to address the issue with an official net neutrality policy in 2009, and it has slowly been figuring out how to enforce it in cooperation with Canadian ISPs. It definitely has its place. Or had, if you live in the US.

Life was good before the 24/7 sit-athons in front of screens, hell some people may really need to let it go as they seem addicted to it... How do you know in which ways they might decide to screw you in the future? Let me put it like this: Let's say you start an MMA/boxing/fitness online video training website showing techniques, exercises and all sorts of related stuff. It becomes enough of an income to either live well off or make an obscene amount of money. Now, say Comcast decide to sign a contract with your direct competitor, offering them - for a fee - fast bandwidth while, at the same time, throttling their competitors (you) to the point that your videos won't load. That's if they don't just block your website altogether. Your competition gets all your traffic because your videos won't load. This is what will be possible and it's actually likely given their track record. Your competitors could become part of the Comcast Package, relegating you to obscurity. Now apply that analogy to literally every business enterprise on the web. Or even to consumerism. Net neutrality is a MASSIVE issue for the internet. In the next ten years you will see just how correct the 98% (according to the FCC's comments) are in this matter.
