Let's not forget that the second and third of those explosions saved several million lives, mostly Japanese.

Thats quite a can of worm you have opened here, although you are probably correct. "Operation  Downfall" would almost certainly have resulted in several hundred thousand allies casualties too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Downfall
