Bendy Demon Posted December 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2017 In Japan there is a legend of a mysterious tunnel that is said to be haunted by the workers who died during its construct. Legend has it that most, if not all, were basically slaves and tells that if you happen to see one of the ghosts in your rearview mirror that you will die a terrible death. It is also claimed that its length varies depending on what time of the day it is. It intrigued me because I have the movie "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" and in one episode there is this military commander who is walking down this forlorn road and comes to a tunnel, as he approaches there is this snarling military dog (a German Shepard, I think) and it seems really angry. During the story the commander first meets a young soldier who emerges from the tunnel and is confused. The commander tells him he is dead and that regrettably he can't go home and had to go back through the tunnel. Later the commander meets his battalion and he has to admit to them that his glaring errors were the cause of their deaths and he was very sorry and ashamed of what had happened and told them to go back through the tunnel. At the end of the story you see, once more, the angry dog who is barking, growling and snarling but never attacking. At any rate I like Japanese legends and myths and some of the urban ones are pretty weird if not creepy. P.S: The Inunaki Village is also another Japanese urban legend that is kinda creepy....
Piney Posted December 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2017 In Japan the spiritual is always tied to the material. Shintoism and Algonquian Spirituality are so close I often think there is a connection somewhere.
thatgrimlife Posted December 25, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 25, 2017 It's crazy how many haunted tunnel stories there are. Now, in regards to the changing of length, from what I've read on the tunnel, it's located on a slope. Downward slopes appear shorter than upward ones, thanks to gravity. I am curious though, why mention Dreams? In that film, the commander stumbles across a pedestrian tunnel; the Kiyotaki tunnel is a one-way traffic tunnel.
HollyDolly Posted January 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 18, 2018 Sounds something like the Hoosack Tunnel in the US. It is a train tunnel in which several men were killed and is said to be haunted. Can't recall if it is still and use by the railroad or not.

Lots of attempts at appeasement being made.

Gods! The "scorned woman" ghost stories I hear from big sister. She learned a load of them in Kyoto.
