The USA did nothing but arm the 'moderate rebels' until it became untenable for even the most blindsided onlookers. The USA has been trying to undermine Assad until the very last moment. So besides supporting ISIS in funds and arms (directly and indirectly), creating a perfect environment for extremism to prosper, they tried to attack Assad at every chance they got. Militarily and politically. These two main policies, supporting 'the moderates' and attacking Assad, is just about the worst thing any given nation could do against ISI, because it is purely in the interest of ISIS. It keeps amazing me how certain people can just ignore all the recent goings on, the complete failure that is US military intervention in the ME (again), and when Russia steps up and takes care of the situation within a fraction of the time the US was involved.. They just turn around and claim the US is responsible for defeating ISIS. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if ISIS would not even exist in the form it did or does if the USA didnt blunder accross the ME toppling heads of state left and right under the guise of Samaritanism ('bringing democracy', 'freeing locals from their evil dictator'), seeding chaos and destruction across the board. Edit: Trump signed billions worth of military contracts with the House of Saud for godsake, re envigorating the already closest of political ties.. with the symbiotic other half of Wahhabism, Wahhabi Ikhwan.. The House of Saud, Saudi Arabia, is the ideological and financial heimat of the ISIS school of thought. Where do you think all these extremist Madrassas / Mosques are financed from that are seeded throughout countries like Pakistan, and even Europe.. disseminating Wahhabi / Salafi ideology? And certain people on this board, that seem to suffer from selective memory, should really read up on the actions of their own government, including Trump (given he has continued the foreign policy of his predecessors, against his election promises [surprise surprise]). Everything negative from 'our side' is rationalised and or downplayed, if any one else does it though.. Hurah!
