The study, conducted by U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough, looked at earthquakes of magnitude 8 or greater over the past four centuries. The phases of the moon are simply caused by the angle of the sun and moon, not by the moon getting any larger/smaller or nearer to the Earth... Edit to add: Now, it CAN affect the tides...
