Nikola Tesla was among the first people on Earth who claimed to have intercepted alien messages from outer space.

I have read about this before and I have also found this:

Tesla offered these remarks in an interview he gave to Time at the age of 75:

I think that nothing can be more important than interplanetary communication. It will certainly come someday, and the certitude that there are other human beings in the universe, working, suffering, struggling, like ourselves, will produce a magic effect on mankind and will form the foundation of a universal brotherhood that will last as long as humanity itself.

Few people know that in 1899, while working at his Colorado Springs laboratory, he announced that he had received extraterrestrial radio signals. The scientific community thought he was nuts, and in fact, cosmic radio signals didn’t even exist at the time. One an easily imagine how alone and misunderstood Tesla must have felt.

Imagine if the discoverers of pulsars had instead claimed they were signals from Martians?

The woo loves to jump to conclusions and that's why they're very rarely taken seriously.

History shows us that the people who end up changing the world - the great political, social, scientific, technological, artistic, even sports revolutionaries - are always nuts, until they are right, and then they are geniuses.

So are you claiming that Nikola Tesla is a woo?

Answer my question first. Do you believe Nikola Tesla is a woo?

COMMUNICATING WITH THE MARTIANS

At the present stage of progress, there would be no insurmountable obstacle in constructing a machine capable of conveying a message to Mars, nor would there be any great difficulty in recording signals transmitted to us by the inhabitants of that planet, if they be skilled electricians. Communication once established, even in the simplest way, as by a mere interchange of numbers, the progress toward more intelligible communication would be rapid. Absolute certitude as to the receipt and interchange of messages would be reached as soon as we could respond with the number "four," say, in reply to the signal "one, two, three." The Martians, or the inhabitants of whatever planet had signaled to us, would understand at once that we had caught their message across the gulf of space and had sent back a response. To convey a knowledge of form by such means is, while very difficult, not impossible, and I have already found a way of doing it.

What a tremendous stir this would make in the world! How soon will it come? For that it will some time be accomplished must be clear to every thoughtful being.

Something, at least, science has gained. But I hope that it will also be demonstrated soon that in my experiments in the West I was not merely beholding a vision, but had caught sight of a great and profound truth.

You should probably turn your radio off and stop using your remote control because maybe that is to woo for you.

That's clever. Nothing to do with what I wrote.

You said Nicola Tesla was a woo so why are you using technology that originally stemmed by someone you claim was a woo?

See Patent No. 613809

https://rclibrary.co.uk/title_details.asp?ID=1074

Guglielmo Marconi was initially credited, and most believe him to be the inventor of radio to this day.  However, the Supreme Court overturned Marconi’s patent in 1943, when it was proven that Tesla invented the radio years previous to Marconi.  Radio signals are just another frequency that needs a transmitter and receiver, which Tesla also demonstrated in 1893 during a presentation before The National Electric Light Association.

It is a bit hypocritical to use technology of someone who you think is a woo.

So? Tesla wasn't the only one experimenting with radio waves. Your reasoning doesn't make sense.

That's fresh coming from someone who rejects modern medicine but takes it when it suits them.

Anyway I think you need to find out what a hypocrite is.

The dude had conversations with pigeons. He was s genius, but he was also a bit daffy. Daffy in the head.

Please, let's not go off on one another regarding the eccentric behaviors of geniuses. Starting an argument over something like this isn't going to get anyone anywhere.

Ok, so Tesla wondered if he might be intercepting messages from Mars, remember life on Mars was something being seriously considered at that time in history. Seems to me to kind of  reasonable really. Right now we listen via SETI just in case ET is sending anything our way.

Quite correct. It usually takes future generations to recognize a visionary's great achievements.

He was working with Lowell who believed Mars had life. I believe that's when Tesla jumped to that conclusion. Doesn't deter from the fact that Tesla was a genius and ahead of his time.

Woo makes a scientist ànd inventor like Tesla open to more unconventional experiments and ideas to test.

Woo has it's inspiration even if the experimenter jumps to some crazy or radical belief.

I wonder if people used to consider it Woo to send man to the moon or break the sound barrier?

Doesn't necessarily mean he was open to new ideas. He refused to accept Einstein's general and special relativity theories and the existence of sub-atomic particles.

A lot of people are talking a lot of absolutes in this thread. Tesla was both woo and genius, his 'crazy' ideas sometimes helped and sometimes hindered him. He was a troubled man but then most highly intelligent people are, it's also part of what makes them brilliant.

Tesla might have been correct about some things but he was definitely wrong about receiving communication from Martians.

A fringie thread seems to always include the name Tesla. Here is a thread about Tesla and it assumes without question that Tesla is never wrong. There seems to be nothing more than Tesla's statement that he heard from ET. Today we have much more sophisticated equipment doing much more than Tesla could ever have imagined and still nothing. That certainly suggests Tesla was mistaken or he picked up a pulsar or something else including his own equipment.

Here is a discussion of the events and a possible source for the radio signals: lightning on Jupiter.

https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-Nikola-Tesla-communicated-with-aliens

If we check here we learn that the signals were likely to be from Earth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_with_extraterrestrial_intelligence

Quote

Inventor Nikola Tesla mentioned many times during his career that he thought his inventions such as his Tesla coil, used in the role of a "resonant receiver", could communicate with other planets,[7][8] and that he even had observed repetitive signals of what he believed were extraterrestrial radio communications coming from Venus or Mars in 1899. These "signals" turned out to be terrestrial radiation, however.

And right here at U-M we have an article

https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/column.php?id=304991

Quote

It was while working on a radio receiver designed to monitor thunderstorms that Tesla stumbled onto something quite extraordinary.

"Tesla thought that possibly he had received a radio signal from outer space," Swartz said, "that could conceivably be from extraterrestrials. Which is a pretty amazing concept for his time. People in that era speculated that there could be life on Mars, but nobody suggested it too seriously. Tesla was conducting experiments in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1899, with a pretty good-sized radio receiver, because he was fascinated by the way lightning played in thunderstorms. He was trying to come up with a way to harness the power from thunderstorms.

"And one evening," Swartz continued, "he received what he called 'regular signals.' You know, like beep, beep, beep. Not the usual static you hear from thunderstorms and lightning. He wondered at the time if he wasn't listening to 'one planet greeting another,' as he put it. From that point on, it became somewhat of an obsession of his, to build better and better radio receivers to try to see if he could repeat what he heard. He got to the point where he claimed that he was actually receiving voice transmissions. He said it sounded just like people talking back and forth to each other. He made notes saying that he was actually hearing intelligent beings from another planet talking to each other, although he didn't know what language they were speaking. But he still felt he understood them."

If that is correct then it seems Tesla certainly jumped to a conclusion without trying to determine if the signal was a local signal.

Apparently, the FBI seized his stuff after he died, even though he was an American citizen.

And then they called in a Trump relative to check whether or not he had made an actual death ray (apparently, he didn't).
