Still Waters Posted February 9, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2018 Neanderthals had large brains and made complex tools but never demonstrated the ability to draw recognizable images, unlike early modern humans who created vivid renderings of animals and other figures on rocks and cave walls. That artistic gap may be due to differences in the way they hunted, suggests a University of California, Davis, expert on predator-prey relations and their impacts on the evolution of behavior. Neanderthals used thrusting spears to bring down tamer prey in Eurasia, while Homo sapiens, or modern humans, spent hundreds of thousands of years spear-hunting wary and dangerous game on the open grasslands of Africa. https://phys.org/news/2018-02-homo-sapiens-ability-techniques.html
+Hammerclaw Posted February 9, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2018 Seems like just another attempt to put Neanderthal in his place as something less than modern humans. One could just as well assume he didn't waste artistic effort by hiding it underground. Just as it is assumed that art, deep in caves in the Neanderthal heartland, is the work of modern humans and not Neanderthals. Neanderthal man did, indeed, venture underground and left sign of his presence, there. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/05/the-astonishing-age-of-a-neanderthal-cave-construction-site/484070/
DirtyDocMartens Posted February 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2018 Yeah, I don't see how smearing pigment on a wall is any harder than making a spear. Or clothes.
