10 posts in this topic

A passenger plane carrying 71 people has crashed in Russia.

The AN-148 aircraft had disappeared from radars shortly after taking off from Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.

An emergency services source told Tass news agency there are no survivors.

It is reported to have crashed near Argunovo village in the Moscow region.

The Emergencies Ministry said it had sent crews to the crash site. Russian media reports the crews could not get to the site by vehicle and had to go by foot.

That area is said to have had historic snowfall this year but if the plane was in flames on the way down it doesn't sound like weather caused it.  Mechanical failure or terror is more likely.

They're citing weather conditions and pilot error as possible factors, but witnesses said the plane was on fire.

What kind of pilot error makes a plane catch on fire?

I've read the crash was spread out over a wide area and that usually means it broke apart in flight.

There was a rumour a postal helicopter had collided with it, but the Russian post service has denied this.

I just hope they don't blame the pilot if they weren't responsible.

It's bad enough that all those people died, but that would be even worse for the pilot's family.

Nothing historic about snowfall in Russia.

Speed sensors that were iced over may have caused a passenger jet to crash near Moscow, killing all 71 people on board, investigators say.

The faulty instruments could have indicated wrong speed data, Russia's Interstate Aviation Committee said.

It's still just a "may be" at the moment.
