Experts looked at flashy Brancaster rings, which they have dated to the fourth and fifth centuries, for clues about their owners. They found that the quality of metals used in their construction, as well as images depicted on them, hinted at their use by members of high society. One famous example, the cursed Silvianus Ring, is thought to have inspired JRR Tolkien when writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
