Lioness grows 'exceptionally rare' mane

An 18-year-old lioness at the Oklahoma City Zoo is puzzling zoologists after she mysteriously sprouted a mane.

In late 2017, caretakers noticed that Bridget the African lion, a "beloved" longtime resident of the Oklahoma City Zoo, began to grow the extra hair around her neck and head, Gretchen Cole, an associate veterinarian at the zoo, told ABC News.

"After a while, it became obvious to everybody that Bridget was developing something a little different," Cole said.

Neat story. Bridget looks great! Its interesting after 18yrs she sprouts a mane? It must be a hormonal thing or something. Such beautiful animals

I've seen female goats with a smaller version of a goatee usually seen on males, but never a lioness with a mane.  Beautiful lioness though.

Could be a lot of things, a tumor on her pituitary gland or one of her adrenal glands. An overabundance of testosterone in women can be caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Not sure why this is a mystery.  Obviously a medical issue causing hormonal imbalances.  Unusual but not unheard of in veterinary science.  *shrug*

Maybe she'll change her name to "Bruce" or "Jenner"

As long as she's healthy, that's the mane thing.

Underrated post. Needs more likes.

So they're sure it's a natural occurrence and not someone spiking her food?

Wonder if she identifies as a male now?

Bridget? What kind of a name is that for a lion?

Sorry, it just does not seem apt.

I wonder if she's been a resident of the zoo all her life.  Whatever the case they are taking very good care for her to reach 18.  Most lions/lionesses in the wild never reach that age.   Bridget is a pretty name for a pretty lioness.
