It seems to me that to any planet you go to the poles are the coldest place on that planet. If we are stuck like this as a planet for a long time, then we have to whats sensible and make things work.

Not true.  The coldest spot on Mercury is on the back side of the planet.  The poles are relatively warm.

Mercury is stuck in that type of orbit like the moon where it doesn't spin on its axis. that makes the side facing the sun hotter then on any side facing out. I believe theres water on the side facing out in deep craters frozen or something.
