China Moves To Let President Extend Rule

China's ruling Communist Party has moved to allow the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, to stay in power indefinitely. The proposal, which will almost certainly be accepted by China's rubber-stamp parliament, would remove the current two-term limits for the country's president and vice president.

What are the consequences for China if President Xi Jinping is to rule indefinitely, a return to Chairman Mao era?

I'm a little surprised this topic hasn't attracted any comments...

...Mr Xi is set to tighten his grip on power with the National People's Congress — China's version of parliament — set to rubber stamp a move to lift the two-term limit on the country's presidency.

Mr Xi could become leader for life.

The Economist magazine has already dubbed Mr Xi the most powerful leader in the world, and he is widely seen as a strongman to rival China's revolutionary leader, Mao Zedong.

How so ?

Xi was dictated by the Politburo to continue his successful track record. To decline would have been disrespectful (contemptuous)

Xi can step down anytime if he wanted to, tomorrow or ten years on, but nobody expects him to stay on that long, part of the reason why the Central Party Committee offered him such terms. If Xi has not been someone trusted enough or regarded with such esteem this would not have happened.

Modern China still has some aversion to most things Mao though , love him or hate him, Mao is still the 'Father'

The Chinese concept of "Divine Rule" and the Western concept is 2 different things. Westerners don't get many Asian concepts and when they do it's just a surface understanding.

Did everyone forget about this little nugget?

My theory is that the importation of wealth from the west by using China as cheap manufacturing was actually part of a plan to undermine the communist party of China by creating a new and powerful class of ultra-wealthy Chinese citizens that would not appreciate the state.  That is why we are now beginning to see the party trying to clamp down on their society again.  It will be too late though, get ready for chaos in Asia while the politburo dies.

Interesting...capitalism vs old communism. I wonder what this means for China 20 years down the road
