Trump tweets he will not impose tariffs on 'great nation of Australia'

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spoke with Mr Trump on Saturday in what he described as a "very good and productive discussion" in which he reminded the President of the long-standing military ties between the US and Australia, as well as the "very fair and reciprocal" trade relationship between the two countries.

"I was very pleased the President was able to confirm that he would not have to impose tariffs on Australian steel and aluminium," Mr Turnbull later told reporters.

Many seem to have missed the part where the tariffs aren't to be imposed on nations who have been trading in a fair and reciprocal manner with the United States.

Only once in modern history was the trade fair and done in the name of the trade and mutual respect.

It ended in fire.

You just can't make a trade without tariffs these days, it's mandatory, naturally that's how capitalism works but that's not necessarily a bad thing if it's greatly evaluated by both partners in trade. Some goods have to be 'taxed' for logical reasons of protecting one's own economy.

After his first twitter announcement below of unfair trade, countries from around the world including Australia, Canada, Japan etc.. weren't too sure where they stood. He made things more clear afterwards, as to who would be exempt.

It's a simple concept really. The countries that have been shafting the US (we've had a huge trade deficit for over 30 years) will have a tariff placed on their goods. The countries that are engaging in fair and reciprocal trade will have no tariff.

I also hope that all the countries who despise us and aid and abet our enemies will no longer receive any 'foreign aid' money. IMO that would also be a really good move. The USA has been literally bleeding money for decades (little wonder we have such a huge national debt). The time has come to stop all of this nonsense, stop just giving money away, stop the terrible trade deals, stop being a country with millions on welfare and provide jobs for our citizens, stop with the open borders stuff and start taking care of our citizens. Time to do what needs to be done to become an economically strong nation again.

You are wrong.  Taxation imposed to protect your economy is not capitalist.  Protectionism is not capitalist.  It is socialist.  The effect of taxes on business or on imported foreign goods is to increase cost to the consumer making purchasing more difficult for consumers and selling more difficult for the producers.  Excessive government interference in the economy aids the extremely wealthy and hurts small business's and consumers.

You are correct. I see now that it surely is socialist but (not related to your answer but generally) nowadays both 'right' and 'left' wear socialism as a cologne when needed. That's how budget parasites in my country operate.
