Arkansaurus fridayi was discovered in 1972 and informally named in an unpublished paper in 2003. In 2017 Arkansaurus was designated the Arkansas state dinosaur despite not having an ICZN-recognized name. Finally after decades of waiting a new paper has formalized the name with a complete redescription.
